Budapest’s seniors get a sweet midweek deal: every Wednesday, the Budapest Retro Experience Center welcomes older visitors with a complimentary retro coffee or a glass of syrup drink when they buy an on-site entry ticket. The coffee here is locally hailed as one of the best, and the exhibition is a joyride through decades of pop culture, gadgets, TV, and street life. The offer is valid only for tickets purchased at the venue on the specified day and cannot be combined with other discounts. Doors open every Wednesday at 4 Október 6 Street, 1051 Budapest, in the heart of Belváros-Lipótváros.

Hands-on time travel

This is an interactive nostalgia trip. Climb into an original Lada police car converted into a simulator and patrol the virtual streets of the Gazdagrét housing estate. Step under the studio lights and try your hand as a news anchor on the period Híradó (News) set, complete with two huge original, still-working TV cameras. Space buffs can check out the exact type of spacesuit worn by Bertalan Farkas aboard Soyuz 36 and see what he packed for the long journey during the 1980 Hungarian–Soviet space mission. Slip into retro outfits without lifting a finger at a giant interactive mirror, and wander a recreated street lined with vintage shopfronts, a parade stand, period cars, and a full ÁFOR gas station where VALMAR shot the video for Úristen (Oh My God). The location has also hosted shoots by stars like György Korda and Klári Balázs, DJ Junior, Neoton Família, Total Dance headliners, Hungária, performers from A Dal, Feró Nagy, Peti Polgár, and Mary Nótár.

Tap, swipe, listen, quiz

Duck into five working retro phone booths to listen to period audio clips, then get hands-on with a curated lineup of ’80s and ’90s tech. There’s a 64-kilobyte Commodore personal computer, the homegrown Videoton TV game, and the era’s coolest quartz handhelds. Test your trivia chops with playful quizzes on the Hungarian–Soviet spaceflight, Malév, classic cars, and retro computing. The center also showcases nine old motorcycles and three cars, including that Lada simulator, plus a living-room set straight out of Szomszédok (Neighbors), the beloved Hungarian TV saga. Tuck into every nook and cranny—surprises lurk everywhere.

Retro bites and sips

Worked up an appetite? The cozy in-house bistro serves a time-capsule menu: retro hot dogs, classic toasted sandwiches, fried sausage and Debreceni with proper mustard. Wash it down with Bambi or Márka soda, or settle in with a whipped-cream-topped retro coffee or a Maci coffee. There’s a wide range of vintage sweets, too. Summer brings soft-serve ice cream; winter warms up with spiced mulled wine. Yes, Bambi is really on the menu.
