Sopron and the Lake Neusiedl (Fertő) region roll out a year-long slate of festivals, concerts, exhibitions, foodie gatherings, outdoor adventures, and family fun in 2026. Spring hikes, summer lake days, and autumn tastings all fit here, with historic palaces and reed beds as a backdrop and a calendar that barely comes up for air between classical icons, musical megashows, kids’ clubs, and twilight birding. Dates may shift, programs can change—organizers reserve the right to revise—so plan, but stay nimble.
On the Water, In the Reeds
The reed maze of Lake Neusiedl (Fertő) calls all summer: guided canoe tours launch frequently from Balf (9494) on July 14, 16, 21, 28, 30; August 4, 6, 11, 13, 17, 19, 25, 27; and September 1, 3, 8, 10. E-boat trips out of Fertőrákos (9421) add a quiet-glide option on July 23, 30; August 6, 13, 27; and September 3. Early mornings in Sarród (9435) on July 18 and 25 cue up birdwatching at dawn, where marsh calls and long lenses take over.
Wild Hany, Many Times
The Hany Safari, a recurring nature tour through the mysterious marshlands, becomes a heartbeat of the calendar: July 9, 11, 22, 24, 29, 31; August 5, 7, 12, 14, 26, 28; September 4, 11, 18, 25; October 2, 9, 16, 30; November 6, 13, 20, 27. It’s the most dependable wild date you’ll find, running into the crisp air of late autumn.
Music in Palaces and Quarries
Eszterháza in Fertőd (9431) is the Haydn engine. Haydneum concerts layer chamber music “spiced with verbunkos” on July 10–11, then pivot to Haydn and Mozart symphonies and piano concertos on July 17–18. Thematic spotlights follow: “Past and Present” (Albrechtsberger, Bach, Haydn) on July 24; “Centuries – Anniversaries” with Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann on July 25; a horn concerto and symphony with Capella Savaria on July 31. The 4th Haydneum Eszterháza Festival raises the stakes Aug 28–30 and Sept 4–5, from Haydn’s Orlando paladino to Schubert’s Winterreise and the “Great” B-flat sonata, Apolló szekerén (Apollo’s Chariot), the Gringolts Quartet, and “Haydn and contemporaries.”
Fertőrákos (9421) loads the Quarry Stage with big shows: Neoton’s grand concert on July 24; the ballet spectacle Queen–Mercury: The Legend by Europaballett St. Pölten on July 31; Vagy mindent, vagy semmit… with Károly Nyári and the Budapest Jazz Orchestra on August 1; the EDDA musical A kör on August 8; a pop hit parade with Mariann Falusi, Viktor Weisz, and Studio 11 on August 9; the operetta Baroness Lili (Lili bárónő) on August 14; We Never Die (Sose halunk meg) on August 19; the Symphonic Picnic on August 20; the Omega musical The Legend of the Girl with Pearly Hair (Gyöngyhajú lány legendája) on August 21–22; János Csík and Mezzo (Csík János és a Mezzo) on August 30; The Master and Marica (Mester és Marica) with the Győr Philharmonic on September 5; Feydeau’s A Flea in Her Ear (A hülyéje) on September 6.
Theater, Laughs, Legends
Comedy and drama stride across the quarry, too: The Lovers of Ancona (Anconai szerelmesek) on July 11, Ray Cooney’s Run for Your Wife (Páratlan páros) on July 25, Agatha Christie–Gerald Verner’s Towards Zero (Éjféltájt) on August 28, and Sándor Rideg–Géza Bereményi’s The Stationmaster’s Cottage (Indul a bakterház) on August 29. “Legends! The Big Musical Show” (Legendák! A nagy musicalshow), a Sopron Petőfi Theatre (Soproni Petőfi Színház) production, lands July 17–18.
Festivals, Food, Family
Fertőrákos Family Days runs July 17–19. Hegykő (9437) packs in a nature day camp July 20–24 and August 3–7, the hearty Vasfazék revelry on August 1, and Street of Wines (Borok Utcája) August 14–16. Fertőhomok (9492) hosts the Homok Barn Festival (Homoki Pajtafesztivál) July 20–26. Fertőd’s St. Stephen’s Day Eszterháza Fair (Szent István-napi Eszterházi Forgatag) on August 20 folds in a Macramé Workshop the same day.
Kids, Ponies, Castles
Nagycenk (9485) turns into pony central: school-age Pony Club on July 10 and August 7, kindergarten Pony Club at the Széchenyi Palace on July 11 and August 8. Nightlife slips into heritage with Széchenyi Palace X Shake It X Central Palace on July 25.
Curiosities and Tours
Fertőd’s Esterházy Palace guides visitors through “Diseases and Remedies in the Modern Age – Quacks, Barbers, Doctors” on July 11, 18, 25. On August 1, saddle up for “In Search of Esterházy Treasures on Two Wheels,” a detective-style cycling loop through history and hedgerows.
Sopron’s ring around Lake Neusiedl (Fertő) keeps the gates open all year. Lace up, book, and bring a spare plan—just in case. Organizers may change dates and programs.
