From July 7 to July 12, 2026, the renewed Veszprém Castle District opens its gates with guided walks, documentary screenings, and a packed citywide festival season. Anyone can wander down Vár Street, but the historic inner courtyards and sacred spaces are only accessible on guided castle walks. That’s how St. Michael’s Cathedral, its crypt, St. George’s Chapel, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Gizella Chapel stop being just eye candy and become a string of unfolding stories—seen, heard, and felt in sequence.
The meeting point for all castle programming is at the Biró–Giczey House, Vár Street 31. Information and assistance are available on site in the 8200 Veszprém, Castle District (Várnegyed) area, with phone and online contact options for visitors planning ahead.
Guided Castle Walks: Step Inside the Story
The guided castle walks run across multiple weeks in summer 2026. They take place July 7–12, July 14–19, July 21–26, and July 28–August 2, then continue August 4–9. While anyone can stroll Vár Street at will, the historic inner precincts open only with a guide—your pass to the restored sacred and community spaces and to the careful work behind the district’s revival. Expect architecture, art, and layered heritage to come alive inside spaces that have shaped Veszprém’s identity for centuries.
Fridays at 5: A Thousand Years on Film
Every Friday at 5:00 PM, the Archbishop’s Palace hosts the documentary screening 1000 év öröksége – A veszprémi várnegyed megújítása (1000 Years of Heritage – The Renewal of the Veszprém Castle District). The film traces the restoration of the district’s historic buildings and the rebirth of both sacred and community spaces. It also lifts the curtain on the crafts and disciplines that made the revival possible: conservation, architecture, and heritage preservation in action.
Dates include July 10, 17, 24, and 31, all at 5:00 PM. Tickets are about $2.75 (1,000 HUF), with a maximum of 20 attendees. The venue is the Archbishop’s Palace; gather at the Biró–Giczey House, Vár Street 31. It’s an intimate, behind-the-scenes immersion—ideal before or after your guided walk.
Rosé, Riesling, Jazz—and Big Stages
Beyond the castle walls, Veszprém turns into a summer festival hub. The Rosé, Riesling and Jazz Festival (Rozé, Rizling és Jazz Fesztivál) pops corks July 10–19, filling terraces and squares with live sets and Balaton wines. VeszprémFest lands July 15–18 with tiered tickets from about $5.50 to $74, and big hitters: JUANES plays July 15 with tickets from about $52 to $74, Beth Hart on July 16, Kraftwerk on July 17 at a flat $63, and Pink Martini on July 18 at a flat $58. The MiniPianoFest also takes place on July 18, keeping the tempo high across the old town.
Street music takes over July 23–25 with the Veszprém Street Music Festival (Veszprémi Utcazene Fesztivál), a beloved freewheeling showcase where the city becomes an open-air stage. Then the rhythm glides into August: musical evenings at St. Margaret of the Árpád House Church (Árpád-házi Szent Margit-templom) on August 2, followed by the Auer Festival (Auer Fesztivál), August 3–9, celebrating classical performance. Families can plug into a summer camp at ZUG from August 10–14, while athletes and fans swarm the 30th Cell-Cup Veszprém International Handball Festival from August 13–19.

The Ezüsthíd Hotel on the city’s west side sits about 2,625 feet from downtown in a calm residential area with event spaces for meetings, training sessions, and press briefings. Another pension near the ring road and Balatonfüred Road, 985 feet away, pairs family rooms with a restaurant featuring local and specialty dishes—good for celebrations and laid-back meals. Close to the foot of the castle, a hotel and restaurant named after Hungary’s first queen promises a direct stairway to the district’s atmospheric streets and squares, and serene walks by the stream into the center.
Right in the inner city near Óváros Square, a boutique hotel in a heritage building offers 29 beds, a 60-seat event hall, an 80-seat cellar restaurant, and a wellness zone with a neck-shower plunge pool, Finnish sauna, steam cabin, and ice fountain. Hotel Historia Malomkert, with landmark charm and a one-of-a-kind panorama over the castle, is built for both sightseeing and business stays.
