From spring hikes and reed-bed canoe trips to summer musical blockbusters and autumn wine vibes, 2026 in this western Hungarian region is built for culture lovers and nature chasers alike. Base yourself in Sopron, then fan out to Balf, Fertőrákos, Fertőd, Hegykő, Nagycenk, Sarród, and Fertőhomok for nonstop action.
July: Music, boats, ponies, and late-night beats
Kick off July 9 in Balf (9494), gliding through the Fertő reed beds by canoe—then repeat the serene adventure on July 14, 16, 21, 28, and 30. On July 10, schoolkids can saddle up at the Pony Club in Nagycenk (9485), while Fertőd (9431) hosts Haydneum’s chamber concerts spiced with verbunkos: Part I with Haydn, Kalkbrenner, Mendelssohn, and Mozart. The wild Hanyi Safari debuts July 10 and runs all season on select dates. July 11 brings Pony Club for kindergarteners at Széchenyi Palace in Nagycenk, Fröccs & Beats 2.0 in Harka (9422), Haydneum’s Verbunkos Part II in Fertőd, a musical romp Anconai szerelmesek (Lovers of Ancona) staged by Sopron Petőfi Theatre (Soproni Petőfi Színház) in Fertőrákos (9421), and a guided palace tour in Fertőd on early modern cures: quacks, barbers, doctors.
On July 17, Haydneum launches Haydn and Mozart in Eszterháza I—symphonies and a piano concerto—while Fertőrákos lights up with Legendák! The Big Musical Show from Sopron Petőfi Theatre. The 11th Fertőrákos Family Days festival runs July 17–19. July 18 doubles down: Legendák! returns, Haydn and Mozart in Eszterháza II plays in Fertőd, dawn birding takes flight in Sarród (9435), and the medical-history palace tour repeats in Fertőd.
Festivals, safaris, and e-boats
Hegykő (9437) hosts a nature day camp July 20–24, while Fertőhomok (9492) throws the Homok Barn Festival (Homoki Pajtafesztivál), July 20–26. Hop an e-boat on Lake Neusiedl (Fertő) from Fertőrákos on July 23 and 30, with more sailings into August and September. July 24 spotlights Haydneum’s Past and Present—Albrechtsberger, Bach, Haydn—featuring Róza Bene and Márton Borsányi, plus Hanyi Safari and a Neoton Arena Concert in Fertőrákos. July 25 stacks the deck: the medical-history tour in Fertőd, Ray Cooney’s farce Run for Your Wife (Páratlan páros) in Fertőrákos, Haydneum’s Centuries—Anniversaries (Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann) with Rita Papp and László Gerhát, the 10th Shake It party at Széchenyi Palace in Nagycenk, and another dawn birdwatch in Sarród. August: Icons, jazz, and wheels
On August 1, pedal into “Esterházy Treasures on Two Wheels,” an investigative loop tour in Fertőd, then settle in Fertőrákos for All or Nothing… (Vagy mindent, vagy semmit…) with Károly Nyári and the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, or cook up fun at Hegykő’s Iron Pot Fest (Vasfazék mulatság). Nature day camp returns to Hegykő August 3–7. Canoeing in Balf continues August 4, 6, 11, 13, 17, and 19. E-boat days float by on August 6, 13, and 27. Hanyi Safari runs August 5, 7, 12, 14, 26, and 28.
August 7–8 in Nagycenk, the Pony Club welcomes schoolchildren, then kindergarteners at Széchenyi Palace. Fertőrákos stages the EDDA musical – The Circle (A KÖR) on August 8, then a singalong feast of favorites with Mariann Falusi and Viktor Weisz with Studio11 on August 9. August 14 brings operetta royalty: Baroness Lili (Lili bárónő) by Jenő Huszka and Ferenc Martos in Fertőrákos, while Hegykő pours Street of Wines (Borok Utcája) August 14–16. On August 19, Pannon Castle Theatre (Pannon Várszínház) plays We Never Die (Sose halunk meg). August 20 is peak holiday mode: a Symphonic Picnic in Fertőrákos, St. Stephen’s Day (Szent István Day) Eszterháza Fair (Eszterházi Forgatag) in Fertőd, plus a Macramé Workshop. Omega’s The Girl with Pearly Hair – The Legend (Gyöngyhajú lány legendája) musical lands in Fertőrákos August 21–22.
Haydneum takes over late summer
The 4th Haydneum Eszterháza Festival takes Fertőd by storm: August 28 with Haydn’s Orlando Paladino; August 29 with Schubert’s Winterreise and the “Great” B-flat Sonata; August 30 with On Apollo’s Chariot (Apolló szekerén); and into September 4–5 with the Gringolts Quartet and Haydn and his contemporaries. Fertőrákos weaves in Agatha Christie–Gerald Verner’s At Midnight (Éjféltájt) on August 28, Sándor Rideg–Géza Bereményi’s The Stationmaster’s House (Indul a bakterház) on August 29, and Spring Is Beautiful, Summer Is Beautiful (Szép a tavasz, szép a nyár) with János Csík and Mezzo (Csík János és a Mezzo) on August 30.
September to November: Keep exploring
Canoe trips continue September 1, 3, 8, and 10, with e-boats on September 3 and 10. Fertőrákos hosts The Master and Marica (Mester és Marica) with the Győr Philharmonic on September 5, and a Feydeau romp, The Idiot (A hülyéje), on September 6. Hanyi Safari marches on: September 4, 11, 18, 25; October 2, 9, 16, 30; November 6, 13, 20, 27. Dates and programs may change at the organizers’ discretion—pack a plan B and go.
