Pécs’ Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, the city’s flagship legacy of the Pécs 2010 European Capital of Culture project, rolls out a packed 2026 calendar of guided walks, hands-on workshops, film nights, jazz, theater, science camps, and candlelit concerts. The district—set on the historic grounds where the famed porcelain-making Zsolnay family lived and worked—invites families, design lovers, and night owls, with tickets typically ranging from about $19 to $30, and select headline shows higher.
Walks Through Porcelain History
From July to late summer, guided tours open up stories of the Zsolnay dynasty and their art. The Discovery Walk in the Golden Age of Zsolnay – Gyugyi Collection (multiple dates, including July 10–11, 17–18, 24–25, and July 31–Aug 1) leads visitors through the Quarter’s most prestigious exhibition. Expect deep dives into the finest pieces and the family’s legacy at the Sikorski House—once a slip room and carpentry workshop, later home to Júlia Zsolnay and her husband, the noted Viennese engineer Tádé Sikorski.
Between July 7–12, 14–19, 21–26, and 28–Aug 2, Cooling Walks sweep through the Quarter’s leafy lanes, pairing architecture with family lore. On multiple evenings—July 12, 16, 19, 26, and Aug 2—the Night-time Pirogranite Walk includes a glass of Villány wine from Tiffán Winery and ends beneath the stars in the Pirogranite Courtyard, where a film, a laid-back concert, or a táncház folk dance might take over.
From Downtown to the Zsolnay Realm
The Zsolnay and Pécs city-to-Quarter walk (July 11, July 23, Aug 30) starts in the Old Town and arrives amid the Quarter’s fantastical architecture. Along the way, guides unpack the Zsolnay family’s globally recognized craft and the most striking tales behind their rise.
Hands-On: Kids, Clay, Colors
Families score big across summer weekends. Glaze-Trapped Tales (for ages 4–8) pops up July 11, Aug 8, and Aug 20 with playful, story-led introductions to Zsolnay’s vivid heritage. What’s Your Mandala? (July 12 and Aug 2) lets makers paint wall-hanging ceramic discs with acrylics, recommended ages 8–99. The addictive Tile-Folding workshops remix geometric motifs into real-world items: notebook covers on July 11 and Aug 8, and a pretty custom gift bag on July 18 and Aug 15.
Science, VR, and a Planetarium
Summer camps bring lab coats and wonder. The Natural Science Adventure camp (July 13–17 and July 20–24 for ages 7–10) blends planetarium shows, spectacular Magic Hour experiments, creative crafts, the interactive LAB – Magic Space, and the VR Universe. Budding scientists get to poke, prod, and gasp their way through hands-on sessions that sneak in learning with a grin.
Spotlight: Pink Perfection and Iridescent Alchemy
Zsolnay in Pink guided tours (July 14, 21, 28) present architect and academic Barnabás Winkler’s private trove—over a thousand daily-use, wildly varied pink Zsolnay objects—under the cheeky banner “In the beginning was pink…”. Meanwhile, In the Footsteps of Eosin (July 15, 22, 29) opens the Zsolnay Demonstration Manufactory to show how those shimmering, iridescent ceramics are born, including a stop in the Apostles Hall to study singular ceramic tableaux.
Inside the Family Home
A House Steps History tour (July 16, 23, 30) takes place in the Zsolnay family’s former residence. It dives into intimate chapters of their lives and maps the factory’s turning points, from technical leaps to stylistic revolutions that made Zsolnay a synonym for Hungarian design worldwide.
Movies Under the Stars
The Pirogranite Garden Cinema serves cult and comfort hits: Raiders of the Lost Ark (July 12), Sleepless in Seattle (July 19), Inception (July 26), and Iron Man (Aug 2). The setting—historic façades, warm nights, a glass of red—does the rest.
Jazz, Theater, and Candlelit Magic
The Metronome Jazz Club swings in with the Oláh Dezső Trio’s Intermezzo (July 16), Fusio Group – New Visions (Aug 13), and Mózes–Kaltenecker: Sub-Rosa (Sept 18). The Quarter also stages a flurry of theater and spoken-word nights stretching into autumn: GÉZA 80 with Anikó Für and Róbert Hrutka (Sept 7); a Climate Adaptation talk on summer-proof trees (Sept 9); Cyla’s enigmatic family saga (Sept 16); Miklós H. Vecsei and QJÚB’s drama The Boy Turned into a Stag Cries Out at the Gate of Secrets (Szarvassá változott fiú kiáltozása a titkok kapujából) (Sept 17); Liaison – Pokorny Lia concert evening (Sept 30).
Comedy and literary tributes bring star power: István Dombóvári’s Deszeretlek stand-up (Oct 7, $25–$28); András Kern and Krisztián Nyáry’s Dirty Fred, the Reader (Piszkos Fred, a felolvasó) (Oct 21); Viktor Fülöp’s The Wise Man’s Brick (Bölcsek téglája) (Nov 4, $19–$21); Tvrtko – Chernobyl 40 exclusive talk (Nov 18, $25); Dr. Kitti Almási’s self-development lecture (Nov 24); Dr. Viktor Holló Csanádi’s Demons Among Us (Nov 26); and László Lakatos’s Tin Anniversary best-of with opener Oliver Wolf (Dec 8, $24–$27).
Major Concerts and Festivals
Candlelit concerts glow across the calendar: The Four Seasons under the stars in the Pirogranite Courtyard (Aug 15, $19–$30), Hans Zimmer by candlelight (Oct 7, $35–$41), Vivaldi: The Four Seasons – Candlelight (Nov 19, $35–$41), and Ennio Morricone by candlelight (Dec 12, $35–$41). Big-ticket crowd-pleasers ripple through Pécs: Jubilee Queen Symphonic (Aug 7, $26), Demjén 80 Tour 2026 (DEMJÉN 80) (Aug 20, $36), Queen Symphonic Live (Nov 16, $27–$41). Family bliss arrives with the Donkey Ear Family Festival (Szamárfül Családi Fesztivál) (Aug 28–30).
The Wider Pécs Beat
Weekly roundups keep the city buzzing, while the Dino Park in Malom Valley (Malomvölgy) delivers all-ages thrills most weeks of July and August. Add classics and comedy to your planner: 20th Pécs International Dance Meeting (Sept 10–14, $14–$22), Gergely Rákász – Mozart (Sept 24, $17–$22), Kálmán–Lehár–Pozsgai’s Queen of Smile Country (Mosolyország királynője) (Oct 10, $15–$19), Kati Kovács’s Jubilee Grand Concert (Oct 12, $28–$51), multiple Pécs Third Theatre (Pécsi Harmadik Színház) dates in October and November ($12–$19), Ray Cooney’s Funny Money (Dec 10, $28), and Borrowed Flat (Kölcsönlakás) (Feb 5, 2027, $28). Looking ahead, 2027 brings heavyweight tributes: Aretha Franklin Live Show starring Gisele Jackson (Apr 17, $31–$46), Michael – The Michael Jackson Show from London’s West End (Apr 21, $31–$46), and Fleetwood Mac Orchestrated (Nov 27, $31–$46).
Book early, bring curiosity, and leave room for serendipity—the Zsolnay Quarter tends to turn a short visit into a full-blown love affair with Pécs.
