Stetl Jewish City Walks (Stetl Zsidó Városi Séták) returns on Sunday, July 19, 2026, guiding walkers through the layered history of Hungary’s Jewish communities—architecture, everyday life, tragedy, and survival—across different Budapest districts. It’s not just streets and facades: participants step into memories that bridge past and present.
Crypts, Monuments, and Rituals
The tour “In the Footsteps of Crypts and Tombstones” (“Kripták és síremlékek nyomában”) explores the closed Jewish cemetery on Salgótarjáni Street (Salgótarjáni utcai zsidó temető), unveiling Israelite burial customs and rules while tracing who was buried here and why it’s no longer in use. Expect a close look at Béla Lajta’s sculptural funerary masterpieces and the striking turul at Vilmos Vázsonyi’s grave. Leading the walk: Dr. László Negyela, with co-presenter Zorán Vukoszávlyev, architect and associate professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, whose research focuses on sacred architecture.
