when: 2025.12.03., Wednesday, Vác
where: Hungary, -

A smash hit since 1988, A Padlás (The Attic) arrives in three cities in 2025 with Veres 1 Színház. The story unfolds over one night in a Budapest attic during the last years of communism. Rádiós, a cyberneticist turned freelance thinker after being fired in 1986 for trying to contact aliens without permission, meets four ghosts seeking passage: Kid (Kölyök), Prince (Herceg), Lantern (Lámpás), and Shover (Meglökő). Gábor Presser’s music, Dusán Sztevanovity’s lyrics, and Péter Horváth’s book blend melancholy, mischief, and sci-fi whimsy into a cult favorite about longing, freedom, and found family.

Vác

December 3, 2025 — 2600 Vác, Dr. László Csányi Blvd. 63. Veres 1 Színház brings the attic’s secrets to a riverside crowd, where ghosts and gadgetry collide for one night only.

Miskolc

December 9, 2025 — 3525 Miskolc, Rákóczi Street 5. Expect the city’s industrial heartbeat to amplify the show’s bittersweet retro-futurism.

Veresegyház

December 20, 2025 — 2112 Veresegyház, Köves Street 14. A winter closer with warm wit and star-chasing songs.

The organizers reserve the right to change the dates and program.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibes: a whimsical ghost story with catchy tunes and gentle themes about friendship and freedom that kids and grandparents can both enjoy
+
Cult-classic status in Hungary: locals know and love A Padlás, so you’re seeing a national favorite with decades of nostalgia baked in
+
Low language barrier for emotion: even if you don’t speak Hungarian, the music, staging, and slapstick make the plot easy to follow
+
Locations are authentic, non-touristy Hungarian cities (Vác, Miskolc, Veresegyház) for a more real, off-the-beaten-path experience
+
Public transport doable: trains from Budapest reach Vác and Miskolc frequently; Veresegyház is an easy suburban rail/bus hop; driving and parking are straightforward
+
Ticket prices typically lower than Broadway/West End, so strong value for a live musical with a devoted fanbase
+
A seasonal December run adds cozy holiday energy without the big-city holiday crowds
Cons
The show is little-known internationally, so you won’t have the “bucket-list” brag factor you’d get from Les Mis or The Lion King
Hungarian language: no guaranteed surtitles, so dialogue-driven jokes and wordplay may fly by if you don’t speak the language
Cities are less famous to foreign visitors; you’ll need to plan logistics vs. just walking from a central Budapest hotel to a major theater
Compared to big-production musicals abroad, staging may be smaller-scale, with fewer spectacle effects and more local-theater charm
