Lights, music, community, experience — that’s the vibe in Keszthely this holiday season. From November 29, 2025 to January 1, 2026, the city turns into a festive playground with close to 100 programs, a sparkling Christmas market, a giant wooden Advent wreath, interactive displays, children’s workshops, concerts, and a New Year’s Eve bash to wrap it all up. The heart of it all is Fő tér (Main Square), where Advent Sundays bring candle lightings led by historic churches, local choirs, and well-known actors sharing reflections, while schools, museums, cultural venues, civic groups, and Festetics Palace (Festetics-kastély) add their own magic across town.

Charity at the Heart: “Warmth of Our Soul”

This year, the Saint Elizabeth Charity Foundation relaunches “Lelkünk Melege” (Warmth of Our Soul), blending festive spirit with tangible help for those in need. The showpiece is a 39.4-foot-diameter, 9.8-foot-tall, spectacular wooden Advent wreath on Fő tér. It’s not just a photo magnet: after the holidays, all the firewood will be cut and delivered stove-ready to families who need it. Local businesses, civic groups, and private donors are pitching in again to provide around 100 cubic meters of firewood. The square gains a new nativity scene, an interactive community corner, and displays created by children. Expect expanded decorative lighting, more projection mapping, photo spots, cozy areas to warm up with treats, and a soundtrack of Christmas tunes.

Keszthely’s stage mixes neighborhood stars with big names. St. Martin, Gigi Radics, Gyula Éliás Jr., André Vásáry, Gyula Vikidál, and the duo Klára Hajdu & Milán Szakonyi all perform on Fő tér, while New Year’s Eve welcomes Desperado feat. Pros
+
Super family-friendly: kids’ play parks, crafts, children’s choirs, family musical, and photo spots keep all ages happy
+
Big, varied lineup (nearly 100 programs) with concerts, markets, Festetics Palace add-ons—easy to fill a whole weekend
+
Feel-good charity angle: the giant wooden Advent wreath becomes firewood for families—nice way to give back while visiting
+
Fő tér is the hub, so it’s easy to find the action and bounce between shows, markets, and candle lightings
+
No Hungarian needed to enjoy lights, music, market vibes; lots is visual/music-based, and locals in tourism speak some English
+
Keszthely sits by Lake Balaton, reachable by train/bus from Budapest or by car in ~2–2.5 hours, with walkable center
+
Compared to other European Christmas markets, this feels more local and less crowded, with unique church-led candle ceremonies - Keszthely isn’t internationally famous, so U.S. travelers may need extra planning vs. big-name markets like Vienna or Prague
Cons
Many performers and program details are Hungarian-centric; English-language explanations can be limited
Public transport at night and on holidays can be sparse; driving/parking during peak evenings may be tricky
If you want mega-scale Christmas spectacles, this is smaller than Germany/Austria’s flagship markets and city-wide light shows
