when: 2025.12.07., Sunday
where: 4200 Hajdúszoboszló

Advent arrives in Hajdúszoboszló with citywide programs, festive Sunday candle lightings in the square in front of the Cultural Center, and a spa complex adding musical night bathing to the mix. The spa town leans into Christmas with concerts and community events, while a towering tree and ornate wreath set the scene. Local parishes, teachers, and students shape the holiday program, keeping traditions close and the mood warm.

December 7: Market and First Candle

The Advent Market opens in Hajdúszoboszló on December 7. The Advent Candle Lighting follows, with a festive greeting from Mayor Gyula Czeglédi. The Reformed Church leads the service, joined by students from Gönczy Pál Reformed Church Bilingual Elementary School (Gönczy Pál Református Egyház Két Tanítási Nyelvű Általános Iskola).

December 14: Charity Concert and Creative Market

On December 14, “SZÍVÜNKBEN SZÜLETIK” presents a charity Advent concert by Kata Kiss and her band. The Advent Market returns, then Deputy Mayor Petronella Majoros gives the greeting at the candle lighting. The St. Ladislaus Roman Catholic Parish leads the service. The Szép Ernő Stage troupe performs Angelic Verse from Hungarian poets, while the folk dancers of Szabó László Elementary Art School revive Luca Day traditions. From 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the ADVENTI KREATÍV MARKET fills the KMVMK atrium with unique, handmade goods by local and regional artisans.

December 21: Music From Folk to Mozart

December 21 closes the candle lightings with a greeting from Deputy Mayor Dr. Gergely Kovács and the Greek Catholic Parish leading the service. Children from Bóbita Kindergarten perform Christmas Dream. At 5:00 PM in the KMVMK theater, an Advent concert flows from folk tunes to beloved carols and classical gems from Mozart to Schubert, featuring opera singer Levente Molnár (Liszt Prize), Katalin Benedekffy (Hungarian Golden Cross of Merit, Prima Prize), opera singer Gábor Kovács, and voice students from Partium Christian University.

December 21–23: Final Market Days

The Advent Market runs again December 21–23 in Hajdúszoboszló.

Organizers reserve the right to change times and programs.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with candle lightings, kid performances, and a mellow market scene that’s easy to enjoy with all ages
+
Spa town twist: musical night bathing adds a unique, relaxing holiday experience you won’t get at most Christmas markets
+
Blend of concerts from folk to Mozart gives you culture without feeling stuffy
+
Prices and crowds are likely gentler than big-name European markets, great for a low-stress visit
+
Easy to navigate on foot once you’re there—events cluster around the Cultural Center and KMVMK
+
English isn’t essential to enjoy the lights, music, and market browsing
+
A chance to see authentic local traditions (Luca Day, parish-led services) rather than a touristy show - Hajdúszoboszló isn’t widely known internationally, so it may feel “off the beaten path” compared with Budapest or Prague
Cons
Limited English at announcements and performances; deeper understanding of the program may require patience or translation apps
Getting there can be a hassle without a car; you’ll likely connect via Debrecen or Budapest and then bus/train
Smaller scale than famous markets in Germany or Austria—charming, but fewer stalls and headline attractions
