Advent brings citywide programs to Hajdúszoboszló, with candle lightings on festive Sundays in the square outside the Cultural Center. This year the famous bath complex adds a twist: live-music night bathing. Across the spa town, Christmas week comes with concerts and family programs. A towering Christmas tree and ornate wreath set the scene, while local parishes, schoolteachers, and students lead the holiday program lineup.

December 14: Candle, Craft, and Charity

Advent candle lighting opens with a holiday greeting from Deputy Mayor Petronella Majoros. The St. Ladislaus Roman Catholic Parish leads the Advent service. The Szép Ernő Stage (Szípad) troupe performs Angelic Choir (Angyaliárs), a set of poems by Hungarian poets, while the Szabó László Primary Art School folk dance group revives St. Lucy’s Day traditions. From 13:00 to 19:00, the Advent Creative Market fills the KMVMK atrium with local and regional artisans offering unique, lovingly made goods. An Advent fair also runs in town, and “Born in Our Hearts” (“Szívünkben születik”) features Kiss Kata and her band in a charity Advent concert.

December 21: Voices, Traditions, Classics

The second candle lighting features greetings from Deputy Mayor Dr. Gergely Kovács, with the Greek Catholic Parish leading the service. Children from Bóbita Kindergarten present their show Christmas Dream. At 17:00, the KMVMK theater hosts an Advent concert: from folk tunes to beloved carols, Mozart and Schubert to classical highlights, framed by Sándor Márai’s words on celebrating fully. Performers include opera singer Levente Molnár (Liszt Prize), singer Katalin Benedekffy (Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit, Prima Prize), opera singer Gábor Kovács, and students from Partium Christian University’s voice program. An Advent fair runs December 21–23.

The organizers reserve the right to change times and programs.

Compared with other European Christmas markets, it’s more intimate and cheaper, with unique Hungarian traditions - Hajdúszoboszló isn’t widely known to U.S. tourists, so you’ll need extra planning and may miss big-city amenities
Cons
Most stage programs, greetings, and poems are in Hungarian—context is clear, but nuances are easy to miss
Public transport can be slower with winter schedules; late-night returns after concerts/night bathing may be limited
Smaller than Vienna/Prague markets—less spectacle and fewer vendors if you expect a blockbuster Christmas scene
