when: 2025.12.21., Sunday
where: 4200 Hajdúszoboszló
Advent fills Hajdúszoboszló with festive charm: citywide programs, Sunday candle lightings in the square by the Cultural Center, and a Christmas atmosphere set by the town’s towering tree and ornate wreath. This year, the famous bath complex adds musical night bathing to the lineup, while churches, teachers, and students lead heartwarming holiday performances across the spa town.
December 21: Candle, Concert, Community
Advent candle lighting on December 21 opens with a holiday greeting from Deputy Mayor Dr. Gergely Kovács, followed by the Greek Catholic parish’s service. Kids from Bóbita Kindergarten present their show, Christmas Dream. At 17:00, the KMVMKK Theater hosts an Advent concert framed by Sándor Márai’s reflection: “If a holiday arrives in your life, celebrate it fully… Prepare for it, in body and soul.” Expect Advent songs and folk tunes, along with beloved carols and classics from Mozart to Schubert, performed by opera singer Levente Molnár (Liszt Prize), Katalin Benedekffy (Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit, Prima Prize), Gábor Kovács, and voice students from Partium Christian University.
Market Days
The Advent Fair runs December 21–23, and an Advent producers’ market follows on December 22.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with kids’ performances, candle lighting, and mellow concerts that work for all ages
+
The spa town twist (musical night bathing at the famous bath complex) adds a unique, relaxing holiday angle you won’t find at most Christmas markets
+
Internationally known theme (Advent/Christmas markets) makes it easy to “get” even if you’re new to Hungary
+
Hajdúszoboszló’s baths are well-known among Central/Eastern European travelers, so you’re not heading into total obscurity
+
Little to no Hungarian needed for enjoyment—music, lights, food stalls, and family activities are universally accessible
+
Easy enough to reach: Debrecen Airport is the closest, and trains/buses or rental car from Debrecen or Budapest get you there without much hassle
+
Compared with other European Advent fairs, it’s more intimate, less touristy, and cheaper than big-name markets in Vienna or Budapest
Cons
–
Hajdúszoboszló isn’t a globally famous destination, so U.S. visitors may need extra planning and routing via Debrecen or Budapest
–
Limited event window (Dec 21–23 for the fair) means timing has to be precise, unlike month-long markets elsewhere
–
English signage and MC-ing can be sparse; deeper program details may be in Hungarian only
–
Less grand spectacle than major European capitals—great charm, but fewer stalls, shows, and nightlife options compared to big-city markets
