Budapest’s Hungarian National Gallery is rolling out a parent-and-baby-friendly series that treats art time as bonding time. Look at That, Mom! (Mama, nézd!) invites new moms and dads with babies under one to playful guided tours designed for the tiniest plus-ones. No one will shush a hungry or crying baby here—this is a judgment-free zone where prams, pacifiers, and paintings are all welcome. Meeting point: the information desk. Each session lasts 60 minutes, caps attendance at 17, and costs about $5.40 per visit, admission included.
Sunny Weekdays with Adolf Fényes (Fényes Adolf)
On November 13 and November 27, 11:00–12:00, the spotlight lands on Adolf Fényes (one of the most sensitive Hungarian painters of the fin de siècle). His canvases flood modest interiors with sun, turn markets into storybook scenes, and treat everyday life as seriously as grand history. As the group wanders through quiet landscapes and intimate interiors, expect detours into how a peasant courtyard sits in the shadow of French Impressionism, what a veranda in Szolnok has to do with Paris, and what these century-old genre scenes whisper about ordinary joys and sorrows. The tour connects directly to the memorial show The Images of Silence: Adolf Fényes (1867–1945) and to related works in the permanent collection.
Maternal Parallels
On December 4, 11:00–12:00, the mood turns festive. Warming up for Christmas, the group searches paintings, panels, and sculptures for the most depicted mother and child in art history—Mary and Jesus. By tracing this timeless motif from the Middle Ages through modern and contemporary art, the tour teases out fresh parallels and surprising returns of the theme. Same welcoming format: babies under one, relaxed pace, $5.40 per session, 60 minutes, max 17.
