Brazil: Orchid Paradise Spotlight
Each show spotlights a new country’s orchid world in a lush, atmospheric setup at Budapest’s Vajdahunyad Castle. Brazil boasts 202 native genera, 23 endemic to the country – meaning they grow nowhere else. It ranks second globally for endemic orchids with 1,540 species. Richest spots: Atlantic Forest (1,398 species), Amazon (784), Cerrado (656). Plant geography tracks species distribution, causes, and plant communities. Brazil’s orchid diversity is remarkable – over 2,500 species, with many more undiscovered in wild frontiers. Famous natives include the Cattleya genus (formerly including Sophronitis and Laelia), plus Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, Stanhopea, and more. No surprise: Brazil’s national flower is Cattleya purpurata (formerly Laelia purpurata), an orchid queen.
