Brazil: Guest of Honor
Each show spotlights a different country’s orchid world with jaw-dropping plants in stylish, atmospheric setups at Budapest’s Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad vára). Brazil boasts 202 native genera, 23 endemic to the country – meaning they live only in specific narrow areas there and nowhere else. Counting endemics, Brazil ranks second globally with 1,540 species. Richest zones: Atlantic Forest (1,398 species), Amazon Forest (784), Cerrado (656). Phytogeography studies plant distributions, their causes, and communities. Brazil’s orchid diversity is extraordinary – over 2,500 species, plus many more undescribed in unexplored wilds. Famous natives include the Cattleya genus (former Sophronitis and Laelia, now in Cattleya), Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, Stanhopea, and others. No surprise Brazil’s national flower is the orchid Cattleya purpurata (previously Laelia purpurata).
