where: 2040 Budaörs

Budaörs throws open its doors from May 6–10, 2026, for the city’s biggest free cultural showcase, spreading music, theater, film, and visual arts across multiple venues. It’s spring in a walkable, leafy, yet distinctly urban setting: jazz and indie meet folk and alt-rock, open rehearsals rub shoulders with exhibitions, and families get a full day out with street theater, workshops, and games. Host of the festival: Erika Szórádi.

Opening With a 40th Birthday and Bold Photography

The zero day tees up the city’s 40th anniversary with Budaörs 40 – Moments from a City’s Life, a photo exhibition at PostART Cultural Space featuring works by Máté Bach, András Bánkúti, Noémi Napsugár Melegh, and Zoltán Knap. The next evening at City Hall, the spotlight swings to János Eifert, Balogh Rudolf Prize-winning folk dancer and photographer, with the opening of Eifert ’83, and a performance by dancers Ádám Bot and Krisztián Szilágyi.

PostART: Big Names, Fresh Energy

PostART launches the music program with the Péter Sárik Trio, joined by Mariann Falusi and Koszika, then a set by Lázár Tesók, the sibling duo Ágoston and Domokos Lázár known from Esti Kornél and Pegazusok nem léteznek (Pegasuses Don’t Exist). True to tradition, the festival invites rising acts: Fiúk, Kacaj, Arcosok, fllozz, and the Várkonyi Csibészek bring youthful flair. Two more heavy-hitting sets follow here this year: Sena and the groove-rich Jazzbois. Across town at Zichy Manor (Zichy Major), architect-painter Attila Máté opens Directions, adding a sleek visual counterpoint.

Acoustic Corners and a Citywide Birthday

Muzsikáló terek returns to the picturesque Calvary Square (Kálvária Square) with acoustic concerts and that easy festival buzz. Expect the unmissable Kodachrome duo with Simon & Garfunkel classics, the dreamy Swim Swim Naked, plus a communal celebration for the city’s 40th year.

Theater House: Sets, Spectacle, and a Piano Star

Inside the shared building of the Mór Jókai Cultural House (Jókai Mór Művelődési Ház) and the Latinovits Theater, the exhibition Before the Curtain Rises reveals set and visual designs from the theater’s productions. Families get a lavish musical treat: The Tree of the Round Life, a joint performance by the Fellegjárók Társulat and the Artashat Armenian Theater. Friday night lands with a concert show by pianist Csilla Szentpéteri and guest Alíz Nyári.

Main Street Turns Into a Playground and a Stage

The stretch of Liberty Road (Szabadság Road) between King Charles Road (Károly király Road) and Kisfaludy Street closes for all-day fun on Saturday. From morning to early afternoon, family programs pile on: Kaláka and Kazuka children’s concerts, RhythmLab (RitmusLabor) with Bercel Sárkány of Margaret Island, Serbian folk dance by KUD Taban, street theater, old-time games, Tintaló Circus, a juggling playhouse, and more. As the sun shifts, the music kicks harder: Kacaj, Galaxisok, Quimby, and Analog Balaton run the evening to 10:30 p.m.

Companion programs pop from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Band of Streets blows New Orleans street jazz, stilt-walkers spark interactive mayhem, a juggling playground lets anyone taste the circus, and balatonoffseason stages a street exhibition. There’s a HappyCopter helicopter simulator, Paprika Jancsi’s slingshot booth, Cloud Hunting, Kata Bartha’s vintage-time “Book Mothery,” the Csupa-csoda Traveling Playground, Vitéz László Puppet Automaton, BÁBaKALÁCS Puppet Theater, MagTÁR interactive game, Ferkó Kádár’s Photo Theater, Norbi Néder’s carousel and BabTársulat games, plus free health screenings, an info point with assessments and playful activities, and a craft fair with face painting, hair braiding, chimney cake, and treats.

Film, Avant-Pop, and Visual Beats at Zichy Manor

Zichy Manor’s courtyard becomes a cinema again for the Malter Film Festival selections. “Hungarian cinema is cool,” says Malter—and audiences meet the creators after the screenings. The same yard hosts the jazz-trance of Santa Diver and the joyous whirlwind of Erzsi Kiss Panchan. Visual art deepens the offer all weekend: the Little Hands – Masterpieces (Kis kezek – mesterművek) show at KözTér18 gathers methods and viewpoints from freshly graduated art teachers—Viktória Guzs, Lótos Ádám, Sára Szalka, and Gábor Winkler-Nemes—opening with remarks by Lótos. Street-side, members of the Budaörs Artists’ Association and balatonoffseason stage outdoor micro-exhibitions.

Sunset on Kőhegy, Beats on Vinyl

Kőhegy rejoins the map with an open-air, vinyl-only session: oneeyedman and szabomarton blend ambient, downtempo, jazz, and deep house as the sunset does its magic from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. It’s all about that slow-bloom atmosphere above the city.

Finale in the Sports Hall: Verdi Meets Erkel

Sunday’s closing gala fills the City Pool and Sports Hall with arias by Verdi and Erkel at 7 p.m., performed by the VIVART Budaörs Sinfonietta. Soloists: soprano Marianna Sipos and baritone Zsolt Haja. Choirs include Budaörsi Pro Musica (conducted by Csaba Tóth), the Ferenc Sapszon Choir and the Budapest Choir (Budapesti Kórus) (both led by Barnabás Hegyi), the Cantabile Choir Törökbálint (Marianna Vékey), and Vox Humana Vác (Bence Sándor). Conductor: Imre Kollár.
