when: 2026.03.19., Thursday - 2026.03.22., Sunday

Budapest’s Orchid and Bromeliad Exhibition is back March 19–22, 2026, lighting up Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvár) in City Park with a lush, scent-drenched celebration of orchids and their tropical companions. Hosted by the Hungarian Orchid Society, the beloved spring show once again promises a mesmerizing spread where orchids take center stage—and this year’s featured guest country is Brazil.

At 1146 Budapest, District 14 (Zugló), inside the storybook halls and courtyards of Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvár), visitors can admire and buy plants from Hungarian collectors, exhibitors, and traders. Expect a sweeping lineup: orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, tropicals, bougainvillea, exotic and Mediterranean species, plus succulents, rock-garden plants, and flower bulbs.

Organizers tailor each edition to delight everyone from first-time houseplant fans to seasoned orchid collectors. The 2026 spring event opens in traditional style, led by the Hungarian Orchid Society’s president and a special guest of honor. Throughout the show, the goal is simple: everyone leaves with inspiration, practical knowledge, and fresh discoveries.

What’s On

From Thursday morning through Sunday noon, the program runs full tilt:
– Repotting advice
– Care tips and gear demos (pots, media)
– Expert talks on various topics
– A show-stopping floral design demo

Upstairs, the exhibition stays open all days; downstairs, the marketplace brims with plants and supplies. It’s a vivid, hands-on way to explore the orchid world in a carefully staged, atmospheric setting inside Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvár).

Spotlight on Brazil

Brazil boasts staggering orchid diversity. The country hosts 202 native genera, with 23 found nowhere else. Ranked second globally for endemic orchids, Brazil shelters 1,540 endemic species out of more than 2,500 orchid species nationwide—and likely many more still unnamed in unexplored wilds. The richest phytogeographical region is the Atlantic Forest with 1,398 species, followed by the Amazon with 784 and the Cerrado with 656. Names to watch: Cattleya—Brazil’s superstar—along with former Sophronitis and Laelia species now folded into Cattleya, plus Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, Stanhopea, and others. Fittingly, the national flower is the orchid Cattleya purpurata (formerly Laelia purpurata).

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with demos, talks, and a marketplace that keeps kids, beginners, and plant geeks equally entertained
+
International flair with Brazil as the guest country adds a cool, educational angle beyond just pretty flowers
+
Vajdahunyad Castle in City Park is a jaw-dropper of a venue—great photos, strolls, and nearby attractions for a full day out
+
No Hungarian required for enjoyment; visuals, hands-on demos, and basic English from vendors at touristy spots usually suffice
+
Super affordable tickets by U.S. standards, with solid family pricing
+
Easy to reach: City Park is central; trams, M1 metro (Széchenyi fürdő/Hősök tere), and rideshares make it simple, and driving/parking is doable but not essential
+
Compared to flower shows in the U.S. or UK, this feels more intimate and collector-focused, with better chances to buy unique orchids and supplies on the spot - Not a globally famous event, so it lacks the “bucket list” buzz of Chelsea Flower Show or Keukenhof
Cons
Limited English at some expert talks or stall chats could be a hurdle for deep-dive learning
Crowds peak on the weekend, and lines can form in the marketplace area
Buying plants is tempting, but getting live orchids home to the U.S. involves strict customs rules and likely isn’t practical
