2026.03.19 (Thursday) – 2026.03.22 (Sunday), 1146 Budapest, District 14 – Zugló, City Park (Városliget), Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad vára). The Hungarian Orchid Society brings back its wildly popular spring exhibition, placing orchids center stage in a spectacular setting. This year’s guest country: Brazil.
Expect a lush spread of orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, tropicals, bougainvilleas, exotic and Mediterranean plants, plus succulents, rock-garden species, and flower bulbs. Hungarian collectors, exhibitors, and vendors line the halls, so you won’t just admire the blooms—you can buy them, too.
The exhibition takes over Vajdahunyad Castle: the curated show is on the first floor, and the bustling market space is on the ground floor. Both areas brim with color and scent, with the ground level offering a rich shopping selection of orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, tropical plants, bougainvilleas, Mediterranean exotics, succulents, rock-garden plants, and bulbs.
As tradition dictates, the spring show opens with remarks from the president of the Hungarian Orchid Society and a special guest. Doors are open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, March 19–22, 2026. Sunday is no wind-down: the upstairs exhibition stays in full bloom, and the downstairs vendor hall keeps trading until close.
Friday and Saturday are for plant lovers. Get hands-on repotting advice, practical tips, fresh ideas, and talks across multiple topics. A standout floral design demonstration adds theater to the botany, showcasing techniques and combinations to try at home.
Each year a different country’s orchid world takes the spotlight at Vajdahunyad Castle, presented with evocative staging and standout specimens. Brazil is a powerhouse: 202 native genera grow there, 23 of them endemic—found only in specific regions and nowhere else. Counting endemics, Brazil ranks second globally with 1,540 endemic species. The richest phytogeographic zones are the Atlantic Forest with 1,398 species, followed by the Amazon Forest with 784, and the Cerrado with 656. Overall, more than 2,500 orchid species are known in Brazil, with many more yet to be described in unexplored wilderness. Familiar names abound: Cattleya (including species formerly placed in Sophronitis and Laelia), plus Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, Stanhopea, and others. Fittingly, Brazil’s national flower is an orchid: Cattleya purpurata (formerly Laelia purpurata).
