Every Wednesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Budapest’s Óbuda Synagogue (Óbudai Zsinagóga) becomes a playground for 3- to 10-year-olds and their parents with KiddieTime, a fresh program series launching in 2026. It mixes music, learning, drama games, and Krav Maga to spark kids’ love for Jewish traditions and culture in a super fun way. Held at 1036 Budapest, Lajos utca 163, it’s all about shared family adventures every afternoon.

Three-Part Fun Breakdown

Sessions kick off with musical vibes—Hebrew songs, prayers, and holiday tunes that families sing together. Then, dive into the weekly Torah portion using drama pedagogy: games, role-playing, and crafting, all led by a drama teacher to make the stories come alive. It wraps up with Krav Maga action from an Israel-experienced coach, building not just fitness but also confidence, discipline, and group spirit.

The Team Running It

Szilánk Zsuzsa, EMIH’s education director, leads KiddieTime. Radó Miri manages the programs, while Nagy Petra handles all the Jewish content.

Pros
+
This program's a total blast for families with kids 3-10, mixing songs, drama games, Torah stories, and Krav Maga in a fun, shared parent-child setup.
+
Super family-friendly vibe at the historic Óbuda Synagogue, turning a Wednesday afternoon into quality bonding time without feeling like a stuffy class.
+
The Jewish culture focus with Hebrew tunes and interactive Torah lessons is engaging even for light exposure, sparking kids' interest gently.
+
Unique combo of music, drama, and Israeli Krav Maga self-defense beats typical kids' programs – way more exciting than plain Sunday school back home.
+
No Hungarian skills needed; Hebrew songs and drama are universal fun, and staff likely accommodate English-speaking tourists like us Yanks.
+
Dead easy to reach by public transport – hop on the metro to Újpest then bus 19 or tram to Lajos utca, or drive and park nearby in Óbuda.
+
Free after simple registration, and short 90-minute sessions slot perfectly into a Budapest tourist schedule without eating your whole day.
Cons
KiddieTime's brand new for 2026, so it's not well-known internationally yet – you'll be a pioneer but might not find much online buzz.
Óbuda Synagogue is cool but lesser-known to foreign visitors compared to Pest hotspots like the Great Synagogue or thermal baths.
Strictly for Jewish kids and traditions, so if your family's not into that scene, it won't compare to universal attractions like Disney or Legoland.
Dates kick off April 2026 with just Wednesdays – gotta time your U.S. vacation perfectly or risk missing out.
