“Recolor It!”: Mystery Meets Making

January 21, 2026, 4:00–5:30 p.m.; January 28, 2026, 4:00–5:30 p.m.
This January, “Recolor It!” invites kids on a thrilling mission: the Gallery’s spaces are steeped in mysterious stories, calling for the sharpest young detectives. Together, we track a great painter—uncovering the secrets of Lajos Tihanyi. Expect close-up investigations of dozens of his works, hunting for every hidden detail that matters. If the team is clever, the pieces click and the riddle reveals itself. Alongside sleuthing, there’s plenty of making: kids “forge” paintings as part of the detective work, create composite “phantom” portraits, and experiment with photo manipulation.

How It Works

Children participate independently, without accompanying adults. After the session, they’re escorted as a group back to the information desk between 5:30 and 5:40 p.m. Meeting point: information desk. Ages: 6–12. Maximum group size: 15. Program fee: $6.86.

Jump In Any Time

The Creative Makerspace runs new themes monthly with fresh activities each session. Events are standalone—join any date. Locations/dates: Budapest, 01/21/2026 and 01/28/2026. Organizers reserve the right to change times and program.

Pros
+
Great for kids 6–12 who love hands-on art and puzzles, turning the whole Hungarian National Gallery into a playful studio
+
Super affordable at about $6.86 per child, so low-risk and easy to try
+
The National Gallery is a major Budapest museum that’s well-known and centrally located, making it a solid, recognizable stop for visitors
+
Budapest is a popular international destination, so pairing this with other sightseeing is straightforward for U.S. tourists
+
Easy access via public transport or rideshare; driving is possible but parking near Buda Castle can be limited and paid
+
No deep Hungarian knowledge needed—museum staff in big institutions often speak English, and the activities are visual and hands-on
+
Unique focus on Lajos Tihanyi offers a cool local-art twist you won’t find in most U.S. kids’ museum programs, and the detective format stands out compared with standard art classes
Cons
The session is drop-off only—no accompanying adults—so some families may prefer to stay with younger or anxious kids
Lajos Tihanyi isn’t widely known in the U.S., so kids may not feel the same “wow” factor as with global-name artists
Instructions may be primarily in Hungarian; if your child isn’t comfortable with that, they could need extra staff support
Limited dates and a 15-kid cap mean it can sell out or not align with your travel days compared with more frequent children’s programs in larger U.S. museums
