“Recolor It!” January Sessions

Recolor It! – museum workshop for kids runs January 14, 21, and 28, 2026, 4:00–5:30 p.m. at 2 Szent György Square. This time, the Gallery’s spaces hum with mystery, so only the sharpest young sleuths will do. Together, kids track a great painter, uncovering the secrets of Lajos Tihanyi. Dozens of his works get a close look as participants hunt for every hidden detail that matters. If they’re quick, the puzzle clicks into place and the case cracks. Creation stays center stage: as part of the detective work, they “forge” paintings, craft a composite portrait, and experiment with photo manipulation.

Practical Info

Kids attend on their own; after the program, they’re escorted as a group to the information desk at 5:30–5:40 p.m. Meeting point: information desk. Ages: 6–12. Maximum group: 15. Fee: $6.95. The Creative Studio offers a new theme every month and a new program each time; sessions don’t build on each other, so you can join any date. Dates: 01/14/2026, 01/21/2026, 01/28/2026 – Budapest.

2025, adrienne

Pros
+
Super kid-friendly: hands-on art-making, detective theme, and tailored for ages 6–12
+
Great value at about $6.95 for a 90-minute workshop, especially in a major national museum
+
No need to commit to multiple dates—each session stands alone, so easy to drop in while traveling
+
Hungarian National Gallery is a big, central landmark in Buda Castle, well-known and scenic for visitors
+
Easy to reach: Buda Castle area has frequent buses/funicular/taxis; driving/ride-hailing also straightforward
+
English not strictly required for kids who follow visual, creative tasks; staff in major museums often have some English
+
Unique focus on Hungarian artist Lajos Tihanyi—cool cultural exposure you won’t get in U.S. kids’ museums
Cons
Not a household-name artist internationally, so kids may lack context compared with, say, Van Gogh-themed workshops
Program is kids-only; parents can’t join, which may not suit some families with younger or anxious children
Limited spots (max 15) and specific January dates/times—requires advance planning and may sell out
Public transport up the Castle Hill can be crowded or slow at peak times; winter weather can add hassle
