January: Recolor It! Mystery in the Galleries
Dates: January 7, 14, 21, 28, 2026, each 16:00–17:30. The Recolor It! club turns the Gallery into a clue-filled story zone calling for the sharpest young sleuths. Kids chase a master painter, uncovering the secrets of Lajos Tihanyi. They closely examine dozens of the artist’s works, hunting for every hidden detail that matters. If they nail it, the picture comes together and the riddle opens up. Alongside the investigation, making stays center stage: mini detectives “forge” paintings, create composite sketches, and experiment with photo manipulation.
How It Works
Kids attend independently, with no companions. After the session, staff escort the group back to the info desk at 17:30–17:40. Meeting point: information desk. Ages: 6–12. Capacity: 15. Fee: $6.90. The Creative Studio runs a fresh theme monthly and a different program each time; sessions don’t build on each other, so you can join on any date.
Location and Dates

Pros
+
Family-friendly setup with supervised, hands-on art detective fun for ages 6–12, so your kid gets an engaging 90 minutes while you explore the castle area
+
Super affordable (about $6.90), especially compared with kids’ museum programs in the U.S.
+
Runs weekly in January with standalone sessions, so you can drop in on any date without missing context
+
Held inside the Hungarian National Gallery at Buda Castle—iconic setting that adds wow factor and plenty to do before/after
+
No prior art knowledge needed; activities are playful and creative, not academic
+
Easy to reach: Buda Castle is accessible by bus, funicular, or a quick rideshare/taxi; driving and parking are possible but limited
+
Unique theme (Lajos Tihanyi and art sleuthing) offers more depth than generic kids’ crafts you’ll find at many museums abroad
- Kids attend without parents, which may not suit younger or anxious travelers, and it limits family participation
Cons
–
Program details and staff may primarily use Hungarian; while art is visual, non-Hungarian-speaking kids could miss nuances
–
The artist focus (Tihanyi) isn’t widely known internationally, so older kids expecting big-name hits might be less excited
–
Small capacity (15 spots) and fixed 16:00–17:30 slot mean you need to book early and plan your day tightly around it
