Budapest Kids Flock To Zsilip’s Revamped Sunday School

Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School in Budapest: fun, values-driven learning for ages 4–14, Bar
when: 2026.01.25., Sunday
where: Budapest, 13. kerület, Újpesti rakpart 1.

Budapest’s beloved Sunday kids’ program is back at Zsilip with a fresh vibe and a new name: Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School (Zsiliputi Zsidó Vasárnapi Iskola). Housed in the Zsilip Center at 1 Újpest Embankment (Újpesti rakpart 1), the revamped Jewish Sunday School returns to its two-level playhouse with multiple study rooms, ready to turn late Sunday mornings into a whirl of play, learning, and community. Sessions run Sundays from 10:00 to 12:15, while the welcoming team opens the doors from 10:00 to 12:30 for everyone aged 4–14, including teens on the cusp of their next big steps.

What Kids Do

Expect hands-on prep for holidays, playful learning about mitzvot, a friendly dive into traditions, and the kind of shared values you carry through life. Whether you’re little, a tween, a teen-in-training, or heading toward your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the Zsiliputi Sunday School is built for you.

Group I (ages 4–6): The “Hullám” Crew

The Hullám group runs nature-themed play, crafts, and storytelling that bring Jewish tales and heroes to life. Every Sunday means discovery, giggles, and messy, marvelous making as the littlest ones form a real mini-community. Time: Sundays 10:00–12:15.

Group II (ages 7–9): Creativity, Stories, Games

From September onward, the plan is simple: creative projects, Jewish stories, plenty of games, and a buzzing, happy vibe. The team can’t wait to meet as many smiling “little shells” as possible. Time: Sundays 10:00–12:15.

Group III (ages 10–11): Build, Explore, Laugh

In the Yam group, kids find a tight-knit crew that makes, plays, laughs, and explores together. Think Jewish stories, crafting, new friendships, and good humor—enough to go around every single week. Time: Sundays 10:00–12:15.

Group IV (ages 12–13): Bar/Bat Mitzvah Club

The BMC kicks off Sundays with high spirits and big grins. It’s for those stepping toward community membership, eager to unpack Jewish values, traditions, and their own questions. Expect games, crafts, shared thinking, experience-based programs, creative challenges, and project work. Time: Sundays 10:00–12:15.

Group V (ages 13–14): Training Future Madrichim

In the MKZ group, future madrichim learn how to lead by example, understand kids’ needs and development, and support younger groups—all in a warm Jewish spirit. Time: Sundays 10:00–12:15.

Pros
+
Family-friendly setup with age-based groups from 4–14, so siblings can join different activities at the same time
+
Short, manageable session (Sundays 10:00–12:15) that fits a city-break schedule
+
Central Pest riverside location (Újpesti rakpart 1) is easy to reach by tram 2, metro M3 + short walk, or rideshare
+
Great cultural immersion: hands-on holiday prep, stories, and traditions give kids a fun intro to Jewish life in Hungary
+
No pressure to commit—multiple 2026 Sunday dates if you’re in town one weekend
+
Indoors, two-level playhouse with study rooms—good rainy-day backup activity
+
Compared with kids’ programs at synagogues/museums abroad, this leans more active and community-based than purely museum-style workshops - Not a globally famous attraction; you’ll likely discover it through local listings rather than major guidebooks
Cons
Hungarian likely used; staff may speak some English, but non-Hungarian speakers could need a parent to bridge
Car access is fine but parking can be tight along the Danube; watch for paid zones
If your family isn’t seeking a specifically Jewish program, similar general kids’ workshops (e.g., museum ateliers in other cities) may feel more universal and tourist-oriented
