“Color It Again!” – Creative Studio for Kids

On February 4, 11, 18, and 25, 4:00–5:30 p.m., kids time-travel through paintings, genre scenes, portraits, and old photos to peek into everyday life long ago. What did people use, wear, play, and dream about? Inspired by what they see, participants draw, paint, make comics, and invent their own stories. Children attend independently without companions; after each session, staff escort the group back to the information desk at 5:30–5:40 p.m. Meeting point: information desk. Ages: 6–12. Capacity: 15. Fee: 6.85 USD. The Creative Studio announces a fresh theme and new activities every month; sessions don’t build on each other, so you can jump in anytime. Monthly pass available: four sessions for 23.27 USD (instead of 27.38 USD).

“Toddlers – Venetian Carnival”

On February 10, 4:00–5:00 p.m., the littlest visitors ride the carousel, dance, role-play, and craft the must-have of any carnival: a decorated mask—channeling the city of elegant masquerades and parades, Venice. Recommended ages: 2–4. Capacity: 12 children. Duration: 60 minutes.

Pros
+
Great for families with kids of different ages—there are toddler sessions, 6–12 workshops, and adult-friendly tours too
+
The Hungarian National Gallery is a big-name museum, so even if you’re new to Hungarian art, the setting is impressive and approachable
+
Budapest is a well-known, tourist-friendly city, and the Castle District location is a classic sightseeing spot
+
Several tours are offered in English (and even Italian on one date), so you can enjoy parts without speaking Hungarian
+
Easy to reach: Castle District is accessible by buses, funicular, and taxis; rideshares and parking garages nearby make driving doable
+
Super affordable by U.S. standards—about $6.85 per kid session or a discounted monthly pass
+
Compared with kids’ museum programs in the U.S. or Western Europe, the groups are small (12–15 kids), hands-on, and feel personal - Many sessions seem Hungarian-led, so some kids’ activities may be language-dependent unless you pick the English ones
Cons
Children attend independently in the “Color It Again!” studio, which might not suit parents who want to accompany younger or shy kids
Castle District traffic and parking can be tricky during peak hours or bad weather
If your family isn’t into fine art or Lajos Tihanyi-era topics, it may feel niche compared to more universally themed children’s museums abroad
