Educator-led sessions focus on hands-on discovery as much as knowledge. On request, exhibition visits can be paired with studio work so kids pick up manual techniques and explore topics in fresh, practical ways. Venue: 1014 Budapest, Szent György Square (Szent György tér) 2. Date: Tuesday, 2026-01-13.

“Recolor It!” museum studio for kids

January 14, 21, 28, 2026, 16:00–17:30. January’s “Recolor It!” (“Színezd újra!”) club spins a mystery through the Gallery’s halls and recruits the sharpest detectives. Together with the little sleuths, the hunt follows a major painter, uncovering the secrets of Lajos Tihanyi. Kids examine dozens of the artist’s works, scanning canvases for hidden, meaningful details. If they piece it together, the puzzle cracks and the story clicks into place. Creation stays central: as part of the detective work they “forge” paintings, craft a composite sketch, and experiment with photo manipulation.

Children attend independently, without guardians; after the session, they’re escorted back to the information desk as a group at 17:30–17:40. Meeting point: information desk. Ages: 6–12. Max group: 15. Program fee: $6.83. The Creative Studio runs a fresh theme monthly with a different program each time. Sessions are standalone—join on any date.

Toddlers – Snowflake Dance

January 13 and 27, 2026, 16:00–17:00. Pull on the coziest mittens and warmest snow boots for a magical winter adventure at the National Gallery. Watch the forest turn white and find the colors still hiding in snowy landscapes. Sing, tell stories, and dance with the snowflakes. Recommended ages: 2–4. Max: 12 kids. Duration: 60 minutes.

Toddlers – Venetian Carnival

February 10, 2026, 16:00–17:00. Head to Venice, Italy, the city of elegant masked balls and grand parades. Dive into carefree fun: ride the carousel, dance, and try on different roles. Finish by crafting the carnival essential—a decorated mask. Recommended ages: 2–4. Max: 12 kids. Duration: 60 minutes.

Pros
+
Family-friendly: tailored sessions for ages 2–4 and 6–12, small groups, hands-on art and storytelling, and staff escort at pickup
+
Super affordable by U.S. standards (~$6.83 per kid) so you can try it without budgeting stress
+
Hungarian National Gallery is a well-known, reputable institution in Budapest, giving kids a legit cultural experience
+
No deep Hungarian knowledge needed for art-making; staff at major museums often manage basic English and the structure is easy to follow
+
Easy to reach: the Gallery sits in Buda Castle area, with frequent buses/funicular/taxis and straightforward car access plus central tourist location
+
Compared to kids’ museum programs in the U.S. or Western Europe, it’s similarly interactive but at a fraction of the price
+
Standalone sessions mean you can drop in on a single date during your trip without committing to a series
Cons
Some activities and clues may be Hungarian-language led; younger kids with zero Hungarian might need extra guidance
Limited dates and narrow time windows (mostly 16:00–17:30), which can clash with sightseeing naps or dinner plans
Children attend independently, so parents can’t join inside—less ideal if you prefer to supervise or your child is shy
The artist focus (e.g., Lajos Tihanyi) isn’t internationally famous, so the detective theme may resonate less than, say, Monet or Van Gogh-themed programs
