when: 2026. February 27., Friday

Free guided tours kick off every Saturday at the Parliament Museum in Budapest, inviting visitors to dive into A Thousand Years of Hungarian Legislation (A magyar törvényhozás ezer éve), a continually refreshed exhibition. The 45-minute tours start at 10:00 a.m. from the Visitor Centre of the Hungarian Parliament Building, at 1055 Budapest, Kossuth Lajos Square (Kossuth Lajos tér) 1–3, in the 5th District (Belváros-Lipótváros).

How the exhibition unfolds

Structured in eight chapters and told in chronological order, the exhibition traces the roots, formation, and evolution of Hungarian parliamentarism from the Middle Ages to the regime change. The opening section follows the story from the earliest assemblies to the estates-based Diet. The second section spans up to 1918, charting the birth of the modern parliament—from the Reform Era assemblies through the emergence of a representative legislature to the consolidation of a new, principle-based parliamentary system. The third section covers 1918–1990, capturing the twists, false starts, and restarts that reshaped parliamentary life.

Interactive highlights and booking

Visitors can explore the essence of the Golden Bull and the April Laws through interactive features and gain a fuller picture of the searching-and-restarting years between 1918 and 1990. Pros
+
Free guided tours every Saturday are a budget win and easy to slot into a weekend itinerary
+
Family-friendly vibe: a compact 45-minute format and interactive bits (Golden Bull, April Laws) keep teens and history-curious kids engaged
+
The subject—parliamentary history—links to big European themes, so even if you don’t know Hungary deeply, it feels relevant
+
The location (Hungarian Parliament Building at Kossuth Lajos Square) is one of Budapest’s top sights that most U.S. visitors recognize from photos
+
No Hungarian needed: guided format and museum context make it accessible to English speakers
+
Super central and easy to reach: Metro M2 Kossuth Lajos tér stop and plenty of trams/buses, plus straightforward car/taxi drop-off
+
Compared with paid parliament tours elsewhere (e.g., London, Vienna), this free museum tour offers solid value and a focused, digestible storyline - The topic, while important, isn’t as universally famous as, say, British or French parliamentary history, so the draw may feel niche
Cons
Registration by email the day before and a 30-person cap can make it tricky for spontaneous travelers
It’s museum-only, not the full ornate chamber tour—so architecture buffs might feel shortchanged vs. other countries’ grand parliamentary interiors
Saturday-only timing means fewer chances to fit it into a tight Budapest stay
