Graphic Studio Secrets: The History of Woodcut

Dive into the Graphic Collection with both art-historical and technical insights—a guided tour, workshop, and hands-on creation alongside an art historian and a graphic artist. The session opens with a short art-historical introduction, browsing works from the show Through a Mannerist Eye – Graphics from the Georg Baselitz Collection (Manierista szemmel – GrafikĂĄk Georg Baselitz gyƱjtemĂ©nyĂ©bƑl), then slips behind the scenes to uncover printmaking processes. In the second half, participants learn the technique hands-on: get to know the tools, carve a printing block, and produce a personal fine-art print.

Dates: February 26, 2026, 4:30–7:00 PM, and March 12, 2026, 4:30–7:00 PM. Location: Budapest. Ticket: $23.20 per session.

Pros
+
Tailored workshops for adults mean you actually get hands-on time carving a woodblock and printing your own art, not just watching a demo
+
Family-friendliness is decent for teens and up; it’s calm, supervised, and creative, so older kids with patience will love it
+
The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest is a big-name institution that most international visitors recognize, so it feels like a “must-do” stop
+
Woodcut/printmaking has strong global name recognition and ties to famous artists, so even non-experts will feel the theme is approachable
+
English-friendly staff and signage are common at the museum, so you can comfortably join without Hungarian skills
+
Easy to reach: it’s on DĂłzsa György Ășt by Heroes’ Square/City Park, with Metro M1 and several trams/buses nearby; driving and rideshares are straightforward
+
Value is strong at about $23 per session, comparing well to similar hands-on museum workshops in the US and Europe that often cost more - Not ideal for small children; sharp tools and a 2.5-hour session make it better for adults/teens than for younger families
Cons
–
While Budapest is famous, ZuglĂł/DĂłzsa György Ășt isn’t a first-timer landmark name, so you’ll need to map it rather than rely on recognition
–
Session times are weekday late afternoons, which might clash with sightseeing plans or jet lag
–
Compared to larger craft studios in the US, class sizes may be limited and dates sparse, so spots can sell out and flexibility is low
