Budapest’s Parliament Museum is launching free guided tours every Saturday, giving visitors a fresh look at A Thousand Years of Hungarian Legislation (A magyar törvényhozás ezer éve). The 45-minute tours start at 10:00 a.m. from the Parliament Visitor Center and spotlight a continuously updated exhibition tracing the nation’s lawmaking history from the Middle Ages to the democratic transition.

What the exhibition covers

Presented in eight chronological chapters, the exhibition explores the roots, formation, and evolution of Hungarian parliamentarism. The opening section spans the earliest assemblies through the era of the estate-based Diets. The second section follows developments up to 1918, charting the birth of the modern parliament—from reform-era sessions and the rise of a representative legislature to the consolidation of a new, principle-driven system. The third section surveys 1918–1990, an era of searching and restarts, capturing how parliamentary life was reshaped across turbulent decades.

Interactive highlights and how to join

Hands-on stations unpack pillars like the Golden Bull and the April Laws and map the twists between 1918 and 1990. Registration is required by 10:00 a.m. the day before via the listed email. Up to 30 participants are admitted per tour with a confirmation email. Dates: 2026.01.25; 02.01; 02.08; 02.15; 02.22; 03.01; 03.08; 03.15; 03.22; 03.29. All in Budapest. Organizers reserve the right to change times and programs.

Pros
+
Totally free guided tours every Saturday, so easy on the wallet for families and students
+
Family-friendly length (45 minutes) with interactive stations that keep teens and curious kids engaged
+
Located at Hungary’s iconic Parliament in central Budapest—super famous landmark and a bucket-list photo op
+
The topic (parliament, Golden Bull, April Laws) gives a bite-size intro to Hungarian history, even if you’re not a politics nerd
+
No Hungarian needed—Parliament tours typically offer English options and the exhibition is designed for visitors
+
Easy to reach: the Parliament Visitor Center is right by metro/tram lines and rideshare; car access is possible but parking can be tricky
+
Compared with similar civic-history exhibits abroad, this is more compact and hands-on, so it won’t eat your whole day - The subject matter (Hungarian legislative history) isn’t widely known internationally, so context might feel niche without prior reading
Cons
Tours require email registration by 10 a.m. the day before and cap at 30 people—can sell out and adds planning friction
While central, weekend crowds around Parliament can be heavy, and security lines may slow you down
If you prefer blockbuster museums, this is smaller and more specialized than national-history flagships in places like London or Washington
