Neil LaBute’s razor-edged satire Fat Pig returns to Budapest in 2026 with a star-studded team and fresh bite. RAM-Art Theater (RAM-Art Színház) will host the hit comedy multiple times, fronted by crowd favorite Andrea Balázs (Balázs Andrea) and reuniting the original Misery (Tortúra) trio with director Árpád Iványi and actor-dramaturg Barnabás Réti. Expect fireworks—and a few gut punches—across two acts and roughly 130 minutes.

The story that stings and charms

Tom, a fast-rising corporate player, meets Helen, a sharp-tongued, irresistibly funny woman who doesn’t fit the airbrushed beauty ideal. Attraction sparks into something real—but as office jokes and jabs about Helen’s body escalate, Tom’s loyalty and courage face the ultimate test. LaBute skewers modern beauty standards and the tyranny of appearances: How much do looks buy success, and how far will someone twist themselves to belong?

All-star creative team

Directed by Árpád Iványi, with a script by Barnabás Réti, the cast features:
– Helen — Andrea Balázs (Balázs Andrea)
– Tom — Tibor Pásztor (Pásztor Tibor)
– Jeannie — Szilvia Lilla Tóth (Tóth Szilvia Lilla)
– Carter — Barnabás Réti (Réti Barnabás)

From Off-Broadway to Budapest

LaBute’s celebrated American comedy premiered Off-Broadway in 2004 and earned an Olivier nomination for Best New Comedy. It now gets a Hungarian staging with bite and heart.

Pros
+
Family-friendliness: teens and up will get the themes and dark humor, but it’s not kiddie fare
+
International fame of topic: Neil LaBute’s “Fat Pig” is a well-known American play with Off-Broadway cred and an Olivier nod, so many U.S. theatergoers will recognize it
+
Location familiarity: Budapest is a major, tourist-friendly city that U.S. travelers know and visit often
+
Language needs: Hungarian production likely, but plot is easy to follow and some venues sometimes offer English supertitles; even without, experienced theater fans can track the story
+
Getting there: both venues sit in central districts with excellent metro/tram/bus links and easy rideshares; driving and parking are doable but not necessary
+
Comparability: stacks up well against U.S./UK stagings—intimate venues, strong local cast, and cheaper tickets than Broadway/West End
+
Cultural angle: seeing an American play through a Hungarian lens is a cool twist you won’t get at home - Family-friendliness: content includes body-shaming and adult language, which can be rough for younger kids
Cons
International fame of location: the specific theaters (RAM-Art Színház/Jókai utca venue) aren’t marquee tourist landmarks, so first-timers may need extra wayfinding
Language needs: if there are no English supertitles on your night, non-Hungarian speakers will miss nuances and jokes
Comparability: production values may feel smaller-scale than big U.S. city theaters, and date changes are possible, which can complicate tight travel itineraries
