Budapest’s Tropicarium, the city’s beloved Shark Zoo, is rolling out a full slate of colorful programs and up-close animal feeding shows throughout 2026. Ocean addicts and exotic-animal fans can watch daily life unfold at fin’s length and feather’s reach, with opportunities for interactive moments that turn a visit into a story you’ll retell for years. Open every day, the Tropicarium delivers family-ready experiences that pull you into the wild without leaving the city.

Where to Find It

Set in Budapest’s 22nd District, Budafok-Tétény, the Tropicarium sits at 1222 Budapest, Nagytétényi út 37–43. Eleven new images tease the action inside: sharks slicing through blue water, alligators lazing like seasoned sunbathers, and rainforest colors that glow even on gray days.

Interactive Moments You’ll Actually Remember

Want to watch a sand tiger shark down its lunch? Curious how snakes tackle theirs? Here, you can. The Tropicarium’s signature feeding shows let you witness, and in some cases lightly participate in, these creatures’ mealtime rituals under expert supervision. It’s as close as you’ll get to stepping into a nature documentary without a wetsuit.

Over in the rainforest zone, grab fish pellets from the on-site dispenser and hand-feed the brilliantly colored koi carp that live right next to the alligators — a heart-thumping contrast that’s as safe as it is memorable. Guided tours dive deeper, with expert commentary as you observe piranha behavior, plus hands-on, keeper-led feeding of rays, monkeys, and birds.

Weekly Feeding Timetable

– Monday: 14:00 snake feeding; 14:30 alligator feeding (every third Monday of the month)
– Tuesday: —
– Wednesday: 14:00 monitor lizard (temporarily suspended)
– Thursday: 14:30 shark feeding
– Friday: 15:30 cotton-top tamarin feeding show

Monkey feedings usually run 11:30–12:00, and again 15:30–16:00 in the afternoon. During guided sessions in the rainforest, you can observe piranhas and, under the guide’s direction, feed rays, monkeys, and birds. For a casual thrill, the fish-food machine in the rainforest lets you feed the koi alongside the alligator habitat whenever you like.

Meet the Residents

This “shark zoo” gathers animal stars from around the globe: lazy alligators and exotic reptiles, amphibians and pint-sized monkeys, free-flying birds, and thousands of sparkling fish species — plus the ocean’s heavyweight headliners, the sharks. At the ray touch pool, visitors of all ages can gently pet these graceful gliders and, with keeper help, even feed them.

The shark aquarium’s showpiece is a 39-foot (12-meter) glass tunnel that slides under the action, bringing tiger and brown sharks within arm’s length, safely on the other side of the glass. Every Thursday at 15:00, the spotlight turns to a diver-led shark feeding where predators take food by hand — a slow-motion, toothy ballet you’ll feel in your spine. Elsewhere in the rainforest area, the skies open on schedule: every 15 minutes, a brief tropical downpour mists the canopy above the alligators for a hit of atmosphere.

Make a Day of It

The wider Budafok-Tétény area is stacked with character and creature comforts. The local event center hosts a boutique hotel that blends a heritage façade with modern interiors — just steps from its halls for an easy turn-in after a long day. Nearby, wine runs deep: Záborszky Winery (Záborszky Pincészet)’s Wine City (Borváros) showcases ten Hungarian wine regions in a skansen-style Wine Street, from Badacsony and Balatonboglár to Eger, Etyek-Buda, Mecsek, Somló, Sopron, Szekszárd, Tokaj-Hegyalja, and Villány, with video tours of a dozen more. Törley’s legacy bubbles through Budafok, too: the local champagne order promotes heritage, quality, and the culture of sparkling wine, while Hungaria — founded in 1955 and backed by the Törley group — continues to produce stylish, high-quality fizz through time-honed processes and modern tech.

Between tastings, refuel in Budafok’s old-town eateries. István Tanya Restaurant (István Tanya Vendéglő), open since 1999 on cobbled Magdolna Street, serves hearty Hungarian and international favorites across a snug dining room, heated winter garden, and a summer courtyard shaded by a giant chestnut tree. Looking for Mediterranean? Kerkyra Greek Taverna (Kerkyra Görög Taverna) in Campona plates classic Greek comfort — chicken and lamb gyros, souvlaki, moussaka, grilled seafood, crisp salads, and sweet desserts. For homestyle fast-casual, a self-service spot on Kossuth Lajos Street lines up soups, stews, fresh grills, desserts, and a rotating Chef’s Recommendation.

Wine lovers can trace terroir from the south shore of Lake Balaton up to Tokaj with Katona Winery (Katona Borház). Founded in 1996 and farming 111 acres (45 hectares) by Lake Balaton plus 2.5 acres (1 hectare) in Tokaj since 2006, Katona bottles bright, fruit-driven wines with zippy acidity. Fermentation and aging mostly happen at their Boglár winery, with further aging and bottling often in their Budafok cellar — and from there, straight to your glass.

Good to Know

The Tropicarium is open daily, with programs and schedules designed for both families and curious grown-ups. The rainforest rain show repeats every 15 minutes. Shark feedings anchor Thursdays.
