But the story isn’t over. A playful, time-traveling performance will revive this iconic space in 2026, inviting audiences to step back into its layered past and feel the building hum with life once again.
An immersive journey through a living monument
Within these walls, generations experienced defining moments: the thrill of the wave pool, the culinary legacy of the Gundel restaurant, the scars and resilience of wartime, and movie shoots that turned the hotel into a cultural touchstone. From the outside it can seem deserted, yet the past still reverberates in every cornice and corridor. The experience turns spectators into explorers. Stories, legends, and personal fates converge as the building briefly repopulates, showing exactly why Gellért became one of Budapest’s most cherished cultural heirlooms.
Through a maid’s eyes: music, menus, and movie stars
Guided by the imagined memories of a hotel maid, eras unfold: from the Gobelin Hall drift music and the shuffle of dance steps; Károly Gundel keeps placing fresh creations on the table; outside, a young woman dives headfirst into the wave pool; in the lobby, actor Antal Páger quietly reads his newspaper. We wander torchlit corridors, sip a hot black coffee at the Espresso Bar, stretch out in the fairy-tale warmth of the thermal pools, and, for a fleeting spell, become guests of the house once more.
