Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts is lining up an intensive season of guided tours, curator talks, and hands-on sessions across its permanent and temporary exhibitions. From deep dives into ancient civilizations to graphic arts workshops and elegant Renaissance detours, the program runs from mid-February through mid-March, with additional dates later in the year. All events take place at the museum’s home: 1146 Budapest, District XIV – Zugló, Dózsa György út 41. Organizers reserve the right to change dates and programs.
Ancient China, Up Close
The museum’s flagship guided tour this season is Ancient China Up Close, running in multiple waves to make room for everyone. February dates: February 12–15, 17, 19–22, 24, 26–28. March dates: March 1, 3, 5–8, 10, 12–15, and 17. The recurring format brings visitors face-to-face with artifacts, context, and craftsmanship from one of the world’s oldest cultures. Expect a tight focus on materials, function, and symbolism—delivered by guides who keep the storytelling brisk but informative.
Graphics Under the Magnifying Glass
If paper, ink, and linework are your thing, the Graphics Under the Magnifying Glass tours (February 21 and 28) zero in on technique and detail. These sessions reward close looking as guides walk visitors through drawing, printmaking, and the subtleties that can hide in a millimeter of etched line. It’s perfect prep for those who want more hands-on context before tackling workshop content later in the month and into March.
With a Mannerist Eye (Manierista szemmel): Curator Tours
The exhibition With a Mannerist Eye (Manierista szemmel) gets the curator treatment on select days, promising a look at Mannerism through expert eyes. Scheduled dates: February 25 and March 7 and 13. Expect a candid walkthrough that connects tension, elegance, and experiment—the hallmarks of Mannerism—to specific works, with a focus on what sets the style apart from its High Renaissance roots.
Weekly Highlights and One-Offs
Beyond the marquee series, February and March are stacked with special events. On February 15, go from Ancient China Up Close straight into Shake on It!, a participatory program geared toward families and groups, and Ages in the Museum: Egyptian Gods Shining in the Sky, which brings deities and myths into focus. February 18 features a Curator Tour of The Guardians of Eternity and a talk titled Mental Fitness – Distortion and Elegance – or What Do Artists Collect?, an engaging look at taste, bias, and the artist as collector.
February 19 hosts Hello, Museum of Fine Arts! – It’s Carnival Time!, alongside more Ancient China tours. On February 20, A Masterful Selection of Masterpieces returns, with another run on February 27 and multiple Fridays in March, offering a sharp “best of” itinerary through the museum’s star works.
February 21 is particularly packed: Scarab Files: The Hidden Face of Ancient Egypt peels back layers on everyday and funerary objects; two additional program slots offer deep-dive or family-friendly sessions; plus Ancient China Up Close and Graphics Under the Magnifying Glass. On February 22, Ancient China Up Close and Shake on It! continue, before the week resets with new rounds on February 24–25, including another curator tour for With a Mannerist Eye (Manierista szemmel) and a repeat of Shake on It!
On February 26, Ancient China Up Close meets Graphic Workshop Secrets – The History of Woodcut, an instructive session tracking woodcut from early blocks to modern interpretations. February 28 packs in Yoga with Adél Jordán, Graphics Under the Magnifying Glass, Ancient China Up Close, and Kemet – The Mysterious World of Ancient Egypt, a sweeping, accessible presentation of pharaonic culture.
March Keeps the Tempo
March opens with Ancient China Up Close on the 1st and 3rd, then intensifies: March 5–8 sees another four-day run, and March 6 adds A Masterful Selection of Masterpieces to the roster. March 7 brings both Ancient China Up Close and the curator tour for With a Mannerist Eye (Manierista szemmel). March 10 repeats Ancient China Up Close, with a March 11 curator tour of The Guardians of Eternity for those retracing Egyptian threads.
Mid-month builds to a crescendo. March 12 lines up Ancient China Up Close and Graphic Workshop Secrets – The History of Woodcut. March 13 is a full slate: Beauty and Value – Art and the Art Market explores how taste, pricing, and provenance collide; A Masterful Selection of Masterpieces revisits the canon with fresh framing; the With a Mannerist Eye (Manierista szemmel) curator tour returns; and Ancient China Up Close sustains interest in East Asian heritage. March 14 and 17 extend the Chinese series, ensuring latecomers still have ample chance to join.
Plan Your Visit
The museum café and self-service restaurant, accessible with a valid ticket, favor modern techniques with respect for tradition, using quality Hungarian ingredients. Service aims to be streamlined—and more than a little friendly—so you can refuel between sessions without missing a beat.
If you’re traveling in, the District XIV area around the museum is dense with accommodation options, from business-friendly hotels near Ferenc Puskás Stadium (Puskás Ferenc Stadion) and László Papp Budapest Sports Arena (Papp László Sportaréna) to quieter, green-belt stays in Zugló. Many properties offer fitness rooms, pools, saunas, meeting spaces, and easy access to the M2 metro—useful if you’re stacking multiple tours in a day.
With programming that ranges from up-close connoisseurship to family days and introspective talks on collecting and the market, the Museum of Fine Arts is giving Budapest plenty of reasons to lean into culture this season. Pick a lane—or don’t. There’s no wrong way to tour when the calendar is this good.
