December Highlights

December opens on the 9th with The World of Ancient China Up Close, returning on the 10th with an Unconventional Guided Tour in the William Blake exhibition. The Ancient China series intensifies December 11–14, with paired sessions of Heaven and Hell: The Marriage Up Close on December 13–14. Look for repeat Ancient China tours on the 16th and again December 18–21, alongside a December 19 Blake tour and another set of Heaven and Hell tours December 20–21. The museum layers in family-friendly and thought-provoking add-ons: Mama, Look! – The Miracle of Birth (Dec 9); Texture Pocket – Book Launch, A Masterful Selection of Masterpieces, MerülésMűhely, and Márk Horváth: The Blake Enigma (all Dec 12); Saturday Sampler – Tracing the Holidays (Dec 13); Ages in the Museum: Mummies Become Gods (Dec 14); Mind Fitness – Under the Light of the Star of Bethlehem (Dec 17); and Hello Szépmű! – Christmas at the Museum (Dec 18). From December 23 to January 2, the End-of-Year Festive Season at the Museum brings a holiday atmosphere to the galleries.

Pros
+
Family-friendly add-ons (kids’ workshops, “Mama, Look!”, holiday events) make it easy to bring children and keep them engaged
+
Big-name themes—Ancient China and William Blake—are internationally recognizable, so you won’t feel lost in niche local history
+
Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts is one of the city’s headline institutions, well known to foreign visitors and easy to work into a standard Budapest itinerary
+
Most guided tours at major Budapest museums offer English options or materials, so Hungarian isn’t strictly required
+
The museum sits on Heroes’ Square near City Park, with direct metro (M1) and easy taxi access, plus straightforward driving/parking nearby
+
Good winter timing: packed schedule between mid-December and mid-January gives you plenty of date options if you’re in Europe for the holidays
+
Compared with similar museum tour lineups in London/Paris, pricing is usually gentler in Budapest while still delivering high-caliber curation and venues
Cons
Some programs and talks may be Hungarian-only, so you’ll want to double-check language before booking
Holiday crowds and multiple special tours can make popular time slots sell out fast
Cafeteria and self-service restaurant are for ticket holders only, and menus skew local—great for many, but limited if you’re picky or need specific dietary options
Compared to blockbuster museums in bigger capitals, the Blake show may be smaller in scale, so hardcore fans might find it less exhaustive
