Spotlight on Tihanyi 140

The headline draw is TIHANYI 140, a sweeping survey of Lajos Tihanyi (1885–1938), running 2025.11.21–2026.02.15. Curator Mariann Gergely leads tours on 2026.01.15, while the exhibition itself anchors multiple thematic walks: Rebel Forms, Bold Colors – The Art of Lajos Tihanyi on 01.17, 01.18, 01.23, 01.29, 01.31, and 02.08; Lajos Tihanyi, the Restless Charmer with Nóra Winkler (Winkler Nóra) and Tünde Topor (Topor Tünde) on 02.05; and Budapest–Berlin–Paris: Lajos Tihanyi’s Road to Abstraction with writer and art historian Rita Halász on 02.06. There’s also an online guided tour of the Tihanyi show on 01.22, and a sign-language-interpreted Rebel Forms tour on 01.25.

Fresh Angles and Expert Voices

Art historian Gergely Barki presents The Person Behind the Palette on 01.16, and returns with a lecture, Double or Nothing: Doublings and Gaps in Lajos Tihanyi’s Oeuvre, on 01.24. Writer Rita Halász offers a subjective take with Embroidered in Concrete on 01.17 and 01.31. Other focused tours explore turn-of-the-century nude sculpture on 01.18 and the life and work of Adolf Fényes on 02.07.

Hands-On, Family-Friendly, Multilingual

Creative workshops and family programs pepper January and February. Tots can dance through Tipegők – Snowflake Dance on 01.13 and 01.27, with a Venice Carnival edition on 02.10. Kids tackle color and craft in Recolor It! – Museum Workshop for Children on 01.14, 01.21, and 01.28. Mama, Look! explores Silent Speaks on 01.15 and 01.29, then The Beauty of the Body on 02.05. Make It! sessions include Abstract Experience Painting on 01.17 and Naked Reality on 02.07. Italian-language visits pop up on 01.16 and 02.13, and Valentine’s Day brings Love Is in the Air on 02.14.

Pros
+
Family-friendly lineup with kids’ workshops, toddler dance sessions, and hands-on art making that keep younger travelers engaged
+
English guided tours are offered alongside Hungarian (and even some Italian), so you can get depth without speaking the language
+
Centrally located in Buda Castle at Szent György tér—easy add-on to a classic Budapest sightseeing day
+
The Tihanyi 140 focus gives you a crash course in a major Hungarian modernist, with curator- and scholar-led tours for extra insight
+
Accessibility extras like a sign-language-interpreted tour and an online tour add options for different needs and rainy days
+
Easy to reach by public transport or taxi; driving/ride-hail drop-off near the Castle is straightforward
+
Compared to other national galleries in Europe, the mix of architecture tours, late-night conceptual show, and family programs feels fresh and good value - Lajos Tihanyi and some featured artists aren’t widely known in the U.S., so the subject might feel niche unless you’re into Central European modernism
Cons
Schedules can change and many events require calling ahead or booking, which can be fiddly for tourists on tight itineraries
Some tours and kids’ programs appear Hungarian-first, so certain time slots may not be available in English
Parking around Buda Castle is limited and can be pricey, so driving yourself isn’t the most convenient option
