The Hungarian National Gallery at 2 Szent György Square is rolling out a packed season of guided tours in Hungarian and English across its permanent and temporary exhibitions, spotlighting the evolution of Hungarian visual art in the country’s largest public collection. January Highlights: Tihanyi Takes Center Stage
From January 9, the series Lázadó formák, merész színek – Tihanyi Lajos művészete (Rebellious Forms, Bold Colors – The Art of Lajos Tihanyi) anchors multiple dates: 01.09, 01.11, 01.17, 01.23, 01.29, and 01.31 in Budapest. On January 15, TIHANYI 140, a curator-led tour by Mariann Gergely, explores the great modernist’s legacy, followed on January 16 by Az ember a paletta mögött (The Person Behind the Palette) with art historian Gergely Barki. Writer Rita Halász leads Betonba hímezve (Embroidered in Concrete), a subjective tour, on January 17 and 31. The program Aktszobrok a századfordulóról (Nude Sculptures from the Turn of the Century) arrives January 18. Fényes Adolf művészete (The Art of Adolf Fényes) appears January 10 and returns February 7.
Family Workshops, Kids’ Labs, and Inclusive Access
January is full of family and learning events: Tipegők – Hópihe tánc (Toddlers – Snowflake Dance) on 01.13 and 01.27; Színezd újra! – museum workshop for kids on 01.14, 01.21, and 01.28; Mama, nézd! – A csend beszél (Mom, Look! – The Silence Speaks) on 01.15 and again on 01.29. Abstract creativity gets a turn with Alkoss! – Absztrakt élményfestés (Create! – Abstract Experience Painting) on 01.17. On January 25, the Tihanyi guided tour includes sign language interpretation for accessible visiting. An online guided tour of the Tihanyi exhibition streams January 22.
Talks, Deep Dives, and Thematic Walks
Art historian Gergely Barki gives Kettő vagy egy sem. Duplázások és hiátusok Tihanyi Lajos életművében (Two or None: Doublings and Gaps in Tihanyi’s Oeuvre) on January 24, paired with Kaland a Galériában – Különös arcok (Adventure in the Gallery – Strange Faces) the same day. January 21 brings Szellemi fitnesz – Új év, új stílus (Mental Fitness – New Year, New Style).
February: From Budapest to Paris
February 1 features Nyolcak (The Eight) – a scheduled guided tour. On February 5, Mama, nézd! – A test szépsége (The Beauty of the Body). On February 6, writer and art historian Rita Halász leads Budapest–Berlin–Paris. Tihanyi Lajos útja az absztrakcióig (Budapest–Berlin–Paris: Tihanyi’s Road to Abstraction). February 7 adds Alkoss! – Meztelen valóság (Create! – Naked Reality) and Fényes Adolf művészete. February 8 closes with Tihanyi and an Épületséta – Kriptától a kupoláig (Building Walk – From Crypt to Dome).
