Budapest rolls out a lush, fragrant welcome from March 19–22, 2026, as the Hungarian Orchid Society stages its wildly popular spring Orchid and Bromeliad Exhibition in the storybook setting of Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad vára), deep in City Park (Városliget), Zugló (1146 Budapest). Expect a heady mix of rare blooms, expert talks, and a marketplace brimming with tropical treasures—and this year’s guest country is Brazil, a global orchid powerhouse. Doors open daily 10:00–18:00.
The first floor transforms into a curated exhibition devoted to orchids at their most breathtaking. Downstairs, the trading hall is all about taking beauty home: orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, tropical species, bougainvilleas, exotic and Mediterranean plants, plus succulents, rock-garden gems, and flower bulbs in an impressive range. Local collectors, exhibitors, and vendors turn the venue into a living atlas of plant passion—browse, ask questions, and buy what you love.
Staying true to tradition, the exhibition opens under the guidance of the Hungarian Orchid Society’s president, joined by a special guest. The goal remains simple and generous: whether you’re a beginner who has just met their first phalaenopsis or a veteran collector chasing a unicorn species, you’ll find fresh ideas, practical know-how, and new obsessions on every table and display.
The program’s brains-and-blooms core lands on Friday and Saturday, when professional knowledge takes the spotlight. Expect hands-on repotting advice, grower tips, smart tricks, and lectures on varied topics to tune up your orchid care game. Plus, a dazzling floral design show brings theatrical flair to the craft of arranging, proving that technique and imagination can bloom as boldly as any Cattleya.
The final day keeps pace: the upstairs exhibition stays open, and the ground-floor market hums along. It’s a perfect last chance to circle back for that plant you couldn’t stop thinking about.
Each edition spotlights a different nation’s orchid world, framed in a stylish, atmospheric setup inside Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad vára). Brazil dazzles with staggering diversity: more than 2,500 species, with 202 native genera, 23 of them endemic. Counting only endemics, Brazil ranks second globally with 1,540 species. The Atlantic Forest leads its phytogeographical regions with 1,398 species, followed by the Amazon Forest at 784 and the Cerrado at 656. Famous names flourish here: Cattleya, along with former Sophronitis and Laelia now grouped within Cattleya, plus Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, and Stanhopea. Fittingly, the national flower is an orchid: Cattleya purpurata (formerly Laelia purpurata). Large stretches of uncharted wilderness still hide undescribed species—Brazil’s orchid story is very much alive.
