Brazil is the guest country of the 2026 spring edition of the much-loved Orchid and Bromeliad Exhibition in Budapest, hosted once again by the Hungarian Orchid Society. Expect a spectacular celebration where orchids take center stage—alongside bromeliads, tillandsias, tropicals, bougainvillea, exotics, Mediterranean species, succulents, rock garden plants, and flower bulbs. Local collectors, exhibitors, and vendors will be on site, so you can admire and buy in one place.
Following tradition, the Hungarian Orchid Society’s president and an invited guest of honor open the show at Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvár). The main exhibition unfolds on the first floor, while the ground level transforms into a bustling marketplace offering a rich selection of orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, tropical plants, bougainvillea, Mediterranean and exotic species, plus succulents, rock garden favorites, and bulbs. Whether you’re a first-time orchid fan or a seasoned collector, the program is curated to deliver fresh inspiration, practical know-how, and genuine discoveries for everyone.
Friday and Saturday spotlight expertise. Visitors can tap into repotting advice, clever tips, and themed talks led by specialists. A standout floral design showcase adds theater to the learning, demonstrating creative, modern ways to present and pair orchids with companion plants. The aim: take home plants—and the confidence to keep them thriving.
On Sunday, the exhibition upstairs remains open for lingering looks and last-minute discoveries, while the ground-floor vendor area stays fully stocked for final purchases and rare finds. It’s the perfect day to circle back for a plant you couldn’t stop thinking about—or to secure a gift for a fellow plant lover.
Each edition highlights a different nation’s orchid world. This year, Brazil steps into the spotlight with a dazzling array of plants set in an atmospheric display in Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvár). Brazil hosts 202 native genera, 23 of them endemic—species that occur in a single, defined region and nowhere else. With 1,540 endemic orchid species, Brazil ranks second globally in endemism. The Atlantic Forest leads its phytogeographic zones with 1,398 species, followed by the Amazon Forest with 784 and the Cerrado with 656. Altogether, more than 2,500 orchid species grow in Brazil, with many more still undescribed in unexplored wild habitats. Familiar Brazilian natives include Cattleya (now also encompassing the former Sophronitis and Laelia), plus Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, Stanhopea, and others. Fittingly, Brazil’s national flower is the orchid Cattleya purpurata (formerly Laelia purpurata).
