Every Saturday from late October until the end of December 2025, Sopron invites visitors and locals alike to take part in the city’s best free activity: guided walking tours packed with history, nature, and tales of faith, kings, and the ever-enchanting forests. Organized by the local Tourinform Office, these walks let everyone explore Sopron’s iconic streets, learn the secrets of its churches, and experience the wildlife—both urban and natural—in the nearby green stretches.
When and Where?
Tours set off every Saturday from October 25 to December 27, each walk themed “Sopron the Royal City.” Whether you’re curious about the city’s medieval roots, its centuries-old religious traditions, or just enjoy wandering leafy boulevards, there’s a guide ready to lead the way. Meeting point: 2 Szent György Street, deep in the heart of the Old Town.
Stay in Style: Accommodation Choices
If you’re coming from out of town, Sopron offers charming guesthouses and apartments perfect for everything from quick weekend getaways to longer escapes.
Adorján Guesthouse (Adorján Vendégház), a family-run spot, features seven rooms over two floors and sleeps up to 32 guests. The leafy Lővérek district (Lővérek), where it’s located, is peaceful, just a ten-minute stroll from the downtown buzz and near the city pool. The buildings are independent, meaning privacy, nestled in a tranquil green setting.
For even more peace and quiet, Alpokalja Guesthouse (Alpokalja Vendégház) is a 20-minute walk from the historic downtown, promising serenity away from the crowds. AlsóLővér Apartment (AlsóLővér Apartman) offers options: a two-person suite with French bed and kitchenette, or a four-person apartment with a living area and fully equipped kitchen, both in a cozy family environment.
Anita Apartment (Anita Apartman) is right by Hungary’s western border, at the foot of the Alps, only about 37 miles from Vienna, making it a perfect launchpad for cross-border adventures or winter ski trips to Lower Austria’s slopes, about an hour away. Located in Lővérek—considered Sopron’s prettiest neighborhood—this place puts the town center within a 15-minute walk and is next to marked hiking trails.
If you want to stay steps from the heart of the city, Atrium Guesthouse (Átrium Vendégház) welcomes you with a friendly young staff just minutes from downtown, perfect for exploring on foot.
Bastion Inn (Bástya Panzió), built onto Sopron’s ancient city walls near “Coronation Hill,” earns its name from its unique location. It’s set at the city’s gateway toward Vienna, surrounded by centuries of history, offering two floors of guest comfort and serene city views.
Downtown Guesthouse (Belvárosi Vendégház), in the old center, features a family apartment with two rooms (each with three beds and a fully equipped, separate kitchen), a triple guestroom, and a double studio—each with private bathrooms, making it great for groups, families, or friends traveling together.
Eat, Drink, and Play
Sopron’s food and drink scene keeps things lively. The city’s latest beer garden beckons with its atmospheric courtyard, ever-changing beer taps, and over 200 board games available for you to play with friends, family, or new acquaintances—staff are on hand to help with the rules, from strategy games to party favorites.
Coffee Clinic, not far away, takes its coffee seriously, serving top-quality coffee alongside a full breakfast and brunch menu: sandwiches, classic morning eggs, sweet pastries, and vegan desserts, all best enjoyed on their pleasant terrace.
Diána Panzió, in the much-loved Lővérek area next to health resorts, ensures restful nights in high-standard rooms with secure parking; perfect if you want easy access to both city and countryside.
At White Rose Restaurant (Fehér Rózsa Étterem), expect homemade Hungarian cuisine, friendly service, and a quick bite before heading out to explore more sights.
For wine, Sopron is all about the locally grown Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos) and crisp rosé—though you’ll find every color of grape at the local vineyards. Taste wine in a family-owned cellar set on 22 acres; join a tour, pair your tasting with lunch or dinner, and even take home your favorites at cellar-door prices.
Legend has it, those who once came to Lővérek for healing and stopped by the Wine Cellar (Pinceborozó, now under a new name in honor of its restorative past) left cured. Today, their wine tavern still fills 3,200 square feet (300 square meters) across three rooms, for locals and visitors looking for a lively night out.
Sopron’s bustling food scene includes pizza—hundreds of combinations in three sizes—steaks, and plenty of options for a quick meal or a celebratory dinner.
On your quest for something sweet, make sure to drop by Harrer Confectionery (Harrer Cukrászda), where generations of Austrian-Hungarian pastry masters deliver delicious treats for a perfect afternoon pick-me-up.
