Mezőkövesd rolls out a hearty, music-filled Disznótor weekend series at Hajnal Hotel, bringing back the spirit of old-school winter pig-slaughter feasts with a comfy twist. From juicy hurka and crispy kolbász to rich roasts and unmistakably Hungarian flavors, it’s all about generous buffets, live music, and that warm village vibe—plus wellness downtime when you need it. The main run lands February 13–15, 2026, at 3400 Mezőkövesd, Hajnal St. 2, with multiple weekends running January through April, then again October to December. Events go ahead with a minimum of 40 people.

What to Expect Over the Weekend

Friday night sets the tone: a live-music buffet dinner greets arrivals and gets everyone in the mood. Saturday is the big Disznótor day, and it kicks off early in classic style. Between 7:00 and 9:00, guests can pick up one pálinka and one cup of mulled wine at reception, then hit a generous buffet breakfast from 7:00 to 10:00.

At noon, tradition takes the lead with a buffet lunch: pork broth with thin noodles and vegetables (orjaleves), cabbage with pork (toros káposzta), roast meats with potatoes, and fresh strudel (rétes). The evening is the highlight—Disznótor with live music and a full-scale buffet: soups; roasted meats and ribs; hurka and kolbász; mashed potatoes with onions; stuffed cabbage (töltött káposzta); and for dessert, honey cream slice (mézes krémes) and pudding. Sunday wraps it up with a big breakfast buffet featuring cracklings and bacon—an unapologetically hearty finish.

+
The whole pig-feast vibe is a uniquely Hungarian cultural deep-dive you won’t easily find in the U.S., with live music and village atmosphere
+
Spa access all weekend (on-site medicinal water, near Zsóry Spa) makes it easy to mix hearty eating with relaxation—great for multigenerational trips
+
English not strictly required: it’s food-, music-, and spa-centered, and hotel staff at tourist spas usually manage basic English
+
Easy to reach by car from Budapest in about 1.5–2 hours on good roads; parking included
+
Prices are very reasonable by U.S. standards for two nights with multiple buffets and wellness access
+
Multiple weekends Jan–Apr and Oct–Dec give flexibility, with the main run mid-February for a festive winter experience - The Disznótor/pig-slaughter tradition isn’t widely known to international audiences, so expectations may need a quick Google to avoid surprises
Cons
Mezőkövesd isn’t a top-name Hungarian destination for foreign tourists, so you won’t get big-city sights or nightlife
Public transport is doable but slower: train/bus combos from Budapest plus a short taxi; car is simpler
Heavy pork-centric menus mean limited appeal for vegetarians, vegans, or those avoiding rich foods
