
Eger throws open its doors with a week packed full of culture, food, family programs, and big-stage moments across multiple venues from May 4 to May 10, 2026. Concerts, theater, festivals, exhibitions, and hands-on experiences target every age and taste—plus movie premieres, heritage days, and late-spring open-airs that stretch into the following weeks.
Films, Talks, Premieres
Gypsy Tales (Cigánymesék) – Roma film night and interactive discussion lands May 4, featuring creators from Kecskemétfilm. Episodes from the Gypsy Tales animated series screen first, followed by a talk with the artists and Rudolf Szilágyi, artist-teacher at Eszterházy Károly Catholic University.
On May 6, Mortal Kombat storms in with an advance screening. The tournament is brutal, the stakes world-shaking, and Johnny Cage is reluctantly dragged into the fight—veteran champions clash while a washed-up Hollywood star stumbles into destiny.
Also May 6: Tittel Evenings hosts psychologist Sándor Beke’s Narcissism: In the Trap of the Mirror, a free lecture with registration. That same day, Dr. Barbara Szentgyörgyi delves into The Gut–Brain–Immune–Hormone Connection (Really Going to Eat That?) at a Nyitott Akadémia (Open Academy) event.
Exhibitions Everywhere
From May 4–7, Life Paths pairs painter Mária Bárány, who lives in France, with sculptor Pál Bárczi “80” in Life Paths / Parcours de vie… Free at Agria Park Gallery.
Rudolf Szilágyi’s Singing Birds runs May 4–8, a cross-sensory show where birdsong, flowering trees, bees, animals, and plants form a subtle symbiosis—soundscapes from nature and village blend into the space.
The traveling exhibition Life Is Sacred runs May 4–10 in the Basilica, highlighting the sanctity of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla (1922–1962), patron of mothers, physicians, and unborn children. The Eger Waldorf Primary School and AMI present I Look Out Into the World… May 4–10, free at Agria Park Gallery’s first-floor Community Space. A multiplex movie program also rolls on May 4–13 at Agria Park with premieres and a deep snack bar lineup.
All Three (Mindhárom) – Exhibition honors three world-famous photographers born in Hungary who reshaped photography: André Kertész the most successful, László Moholy-Nagy the most innovative, Robert Capa the most renowned. See significant works May 5–10.
Talks, Theater, Opera on Screen
Actor-singer Balázs Csórics comes to town May 5 with a 90-minute performance on self-knowledge, self-control, and intentional living, mixing personal stories and spiritual threads. On May 7, an atmospheric literary jam, The Legend of Antal Szerb by Zsolt Prieger and Bori Magyar, fuses acoustic and projected images, classic and pop elements, Italian hits, and contemporary violins—a vision laced with Journey by Moonlight (Utas és holdvilág). That night also brings The Magic Flute from London’s Royal Opera House to local cinema screens.
Rhyme and Rhythm Literary Jam: The Legend of Antal Szerb hits EKMK Forrás Children and Youth House on May 7, tickets $6.70 (2,500 HUF). On May 8, the comedy Crazed Prima Donnas, or Neck-Deep in Trouble (Eszeveszett Primadonnák, avagy nyakig a slamasztikában) plays Bartakovics Béla Community House, $13.10–$17.10 (4,900–6,400 HUF).
Heritage, Markets, Music
May 9 marks Memorial Sites Day at Eger Castle and separately at the Valide Sultan Bath Ruin. Expect heritage reenactors, curator-led tours, and the rare opening of the exceptionally preserved Ottoman steam bath with a new interactive exhibition.
The Eger Symphony Orchestra performs Seductive Scents on May 9. Family fare includes The Temper-Tantrum Princess at EKMK Forrás Children and Youth House the same day, tickets $5.30 (2,000 HUF). The Black ’n’ White Rock ’n’ Roll Weekend rolls into Végvári Vitézek Square May 9, where American cars park up after a parade and the Tom White Rockabilly Show hits the stage. The Producers’ Market and Craft Fair at Eger Market Hall keeps swelling, now near 90 local producers and makers.
The Agria Mixed Choir’s Summer-Welcome Concert, Fair Song (Szép Énekszó), sings in the sun on May 9. EgerKör, a city-circumventing cycling tour organized by the city’s quartermasters, returns for its third year that Saturday. The Lifestyle & Crystal Expo beckons with minerals, scented candles, teas, honey, and wellness goods. Dinner with a Winemaker: Marcell Bukolyi takes over BORÁG Restaurant May 9 with a pairing evening that’s more than tasting—memories included.
Cats, Organs, Yoga
Cattus Invictus International Cat Exhibition claws back into town May 9–10 with a WCF show—dozens of beautiful cats and rare breeds—after drawing 3,000+ last time. The Basilica hosts 20–30 minute organ mini-concerts featuring J.S. Bach, Franck, Boëllmann, Dubois, and Vierne on May 9–10. On May 10, Blooming Yoga & Brunch unfurls with a Tuscan-style vibe in the Sun Valley estate—stretch with Anita’s class, relax with a sound bath, then enjoy a greenhouse buffet brunch.

More free Waldorf student art returns May 11–14; Life Is Sacred extends May 11–17; All Three reopens May 12–17. On May 13, Barna Baranyai’s The Boundary of Stupidity riffs on viral absurdities and the quest for the world’s dumbest human. May 14 brings the Szak(ma)rket producers’ market in the Civil Communities House courtyard and The Props Man with András Kern at Bartakovics Béla, tickets $15.90 (6,000 HUF).

On May 16, the Hungarian National Counter-Gallop calls motorcyclists to Eger, the “city of heroes,” for a display of unity worthy of modern hussars. Children’s theater Once Upon a Time from the Ariel Youth and Children’s Theatre of Târgu Mureș arrives, while Harlekin Puppet Theatre’s Don’t Let Me Go (16+, 90 minutes) tests strings and souls. Tour the globe in 80 Minutes in downtown Eger on an association walk linking Tekirdağ (Rodosto), Vienna, Madagascar, America, Egypt—and, inevitably, Eger. Running Circuits Day focuses on collective kilometers, not personal bests. Piazza Culinaria transforms the Quasi courtyard into a Neapolitan-style marketplace. May 17’s Antiques Fair sprawls through the historic center with 100+ vendors. Operetta icon Marika Oszvald’s A Tűzről Pattant – Operetta Gala lights up the evening with humor, energy, and hits.
Pentecost weekend (May 22–24) brings Castle ReDesign Fest (VárReDesign) to the castle: sustainability talks, demos, workshops, and family games; upcycling notebooks and bags; artisans; and folk traditions of reuse inside the collections. Also May 22, Eliza Aux presents The Golden Ink from the Writer’s School series with an author meet-and-greet.
May 23 invites Spring Detox Yoga with a Rose Milk ritual in a women’s circle; Moodgarden & Disaster Area (Katasztrófa Sújtotta Terület) plug in for a night of pop–rock–blues; the Kadarka Vineyard & Wine Tour hikes the vines and finishes with a panoramic dinner and guided tasting at Síkhegy; and the Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszony-völgy) hosts a Pentecost cellar crawl of Eger whites and rosés bursting with fruit and freshness.
