Eger rolls into May with a high-energy mix of wine-fueled street life, free open-air concerts, intimate talks, historic walks, and gallery shows spanning everything from student design to world-famous photography. For a week and beyond, the city’s squares, museums, and halls stay busy with culture, community, and a touch of swagger.
Headliners on Stage
April 30 brings a run of free concerts to Dobó Square under the Egri Csillag Weekend banner. Singer Zoltán Mujahid steps out in a stripped-back duo with pianist Ádám Lőrincz, channeling the golden age of Hungarian pop and the elegance of swing in an intimate, voice-and-piano setting. The same day, Jambalaya Light serves up old-school New Orleans blues with a tight trio—Zoltán Nemes on vocals and keys, Zsolt Magda on sax and percussion, and Miklós Bellák on guitar—boiling down the big-band essence into something lean and groovy. Also on April 30, the long-running Hot Jazz Band revives the 1920s–40s with hits from prewar Hungarian films and the American jazz era, tipping hats to Katalin Karády, Pál Jávor, Gyula Kabos, Kálmán Latabár, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Bing Crosby, and composers from Rezső Seress to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington.
Egri Csillag Weekend: Wine Takes the Square
From April 30 to May 2, Eger’s biggest spring wine event dresses the main square for a three-day tasting. More than 20 exhibitors pour top Egri Csillag whites and Egri Bikavér reds, pairing them with food crafted to match. Onstage, jazz, funk, and django-pop trade off as glasses clink. May 1 adds a free Pankastic! concert—virtuosic, catchy, and built to please both audiophiles and joy-seekers—and a live club-classic reboot by InFusion Trio, who swap DJs for instruments to reimagine 2000s electronic anthems. On May 2, bassist-producer Berci Temesi and Friends close the square’s music program, while the event doubles down on celebrating Egri Csillag’s place as the region’s flagship white.
Talks, Theater, and Smart Laughs
April 30 packs in thoughtful sessions. KEREK-PEREC’s podium talk Segítség, kamaszt nevelek! digs into the mysteries and pitfalls of adolescence—sexual development, emotions, and risks like alcohol, pornography, eating disorders, drugs, and screen addiction—plus what parents can and can’t do. Writer-teacher-homeopathy advisor László Bóna joins as guest. Also that day, journalist-adventurer Tvrtko presents Csernobil 40 at Hotel Eger & Park (about $21), and actress Eszter Ónodi performs Burn Out Baby – The Six Rules of Effective Leadership (written by Gergely Litkai) at Dumaszínház, Bartakovics Béla Community House (about $20).
Walks, Organs, and Local Gigs
May 2 folds history into tasting with Csillagok Csillaggal, a guided “experience walk” from Dobó Square to Eger Castle, tracing heroes from Géza Gárdonyi’s classic Egri csillagok (The Stars of Eger). Local winemakers pour classicus, superior, and grand superior Egri Csillag at stops along the route. The Basilica keeps the pipes singing every Saturday and Sunday with short organ programs (20–30 minutes) featuring Bach, Franck, Boëllmann, Dubois, and Vierne; weekend series run May 2–3 and again May 9–10 and 16–17. On May 1, Patronus hosts a free double-shot of alternative rock: Tisztakosz (Miskolc) from 20:30 to 21:30, then hometown band Hétéltű from 22:00 to 23:00—good tunes, cold beer, no cover.

Books, Brains, and Backyard Classics
May 6 features two deep-dive talks: Dr. Barbara Szentgyörgyi on the gut–brain–immune–hormone axis (Nyitott Akadémia), and Tittel Esték’s free, registration-only session on narcissism with psychologist Sándor Beke. Family-friendly “Spring in the Gárdonyi Garden” returns May 6 and 10 with stories, crafts, and unconventional tours centered on Gárdonyi’s legacy and reading. Literature fans, mark May 7: an irodalmi jam night reframes Szerb Antal legendája with Zsolt Prieger and Bori Magyar—acoustic music and projected images, Italian hits, contemporary violins, and cinematic vibes. Tickets: about $6.70.
Big Weekends: Rockabilly, Classics, and Cars
May 8–10, the 9th Black ‘n’ White – Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekend revs up with live bands, dance, American cars, and 1950s flavor; on May 9, the parade rolls into Végvári Vitézek Square for the Tom White Rockabilly Show. Memorial Sites Day (Emlékhelyek Napja) on May 9 opens Eger Castle with living-history shows, curator tours, and the rare reopening of the Valide Sultan Bath ruins—an exceptionally preserved Ottoman steam bath—now with an interactive exhibit. The same day delivers the EgerKör city-circling bike tour, the kids’ play A Hisztis Királykisasszony (about $5.30), the comedy Lököttek, the Eger Symphony Orchestra’s “Csábító illatok,” a Lifestyle & Crystal Expo, and the Agria Mixed Choir’s summer kick-off Szép Énekszó.

Futókörök Napja, a free community running day where total kilometers matter more than pace, lands May 10 nationwide and again in Eger on May 16. May 9–10 welcomes the Cattus Invictus WCF International Cat Show, drawing crowds and rare breeds.
