Keszthely’s Balaton Theater is opening its doors to young audiences with a myth-inspired musical: Rege a tihanyi visszhangról (Legend of the Tihany Echo), a one-act children’s show that explores how the famous echo came to be—beyond the science. The tale weaves together Aranyanna, a mute shepherd girl; the wave-commanding Wave King; and his son, Prince Tihany, in a heart-tugging story of love and human courage from a mythical world. The Hahota Children’s Theater and Balaton Teátrum bring it to life with warmth and a salute to tradition. Running time is 70 minutes, no intermission.

Central venue on Keszthely’s Main Square, walkable area with cafés and parks
+
Reachable by train or bus from Budapest; simple by car via M7, plentiful parking in town
+
Offers a unique window into Hungarian folklore you won’t find in typical U.S. kids’ theater - Hungarian-language performance; non-Hungarian speakers may miss details unless relying on visuals and music
Cons
The specific legend (Tihany echo) isn’t widely known internationally, so references may fly over kids’ heads
Keszthely is less famous to U.S. visitors than Budapest, so it’s a side trip rather than a marquee stop
