Fall Break Just Got Wild: Sleepovers, Spooky Castles, And Creative Chaos

Experience unforgettable fall break adventures at Festetics Palace and Historical Playhouse—spooky sleepovers, creative workshops, thrilling Halloween nights, and family fun for all ages in enchanting castle surroundings.
when: 2025.10.23., Thursday - 2025.11.02., Sunday
where: 8360 Keszthely, Kastély u. 1.

Spend your fall break getting hands-on, spooked, and creative at the Historical Playhouse (Történelmi Játszóház) and the grand Festetics Palace (Festetics Kastély). From October through December 2025, no one in the family will have a reason to complain about boredom.

Themed Days at the Historical Playhouse: October 23 – November 2

Forget screen time—this fall break is all about real-life adventures. Every day at the Historical Playhouse (Történelmi Játszóház) brings a different experience. Mondays feature old-school cartoon projector shows where you can snuggle up and watch classic fairy tales in vintage style at 10 AM and 3 PM. On Tuesdays, the competitive spirit takes over with board game tournaments for families and friends to see who will be crowned the ultimate game master.

Wednesdays put the spotlight on kids’ favorite fairy tale heroes, with glitter tattoos or face painting by playful entertainers. Thursday is Quiz Day, blending fun and learning with questions themed around animals, fairy tales, and games—with prizes up for grabs, of course.

Fridays kick off search-and-find challenges filled with tiny surprises and plenty of laughter, testing who has the sharpest eyes to find every token. The weekend rocks with an UNO PARTY on Saturday for card enthusiasts, while Sunday is “Green Day”: get hands-on transforming old objects using decoupage napkin art and pebble painting for a recycling-themed craft fest.

This is a haven of real friends, creativity, laughter, and new experiences for every child—and parents are welcome too!

Fall at the Castle: Exhibitions, Sleep Theater, and Open Ballrooms

From October 24 to November 2 (closed November 1), the Festetics Palace (Festetics Kastély) opens its usually off-limits northern wing, including grand ballrooms, opulent suites, and the Venetian Mirror Hall. Guided tours led by experts run daily through the castle’s permanent exhibitions, highlighted by an 11 AM deep dive into aristocratic carriages and automobiles, a 1 PM discussion on hunting and conservation, and a 2:30 PM tour of “The Lights of the Night” at the historical model railway exhibition.

Fall Sleep Theater with Angéla Eke: October 25

Get ready for the unique “Sleep Theater” (Alvószínház) show with Angéla Eke. Unlike any play you’ve attended before, guests settle into artistic beds instead of theater seats. Performances run from 4:30–6 PM and 8:30–10 PM. Angéla Eke personally tucks in attendees before spinning a magical story designed to soothe and enchant. Picture snuggling among handmade blankets and pillows inspired by Anna Amélie, in the fairytale setting of the castle. Tickets are available at the palace and online.

Creative Family Afternoon: October 25

At the Playhouse, families are invited for a crafty session where parents and kids collaborate on unique t-shirt designs. Choose a template or create your own, then transform an ordinary tee into wearable art. Recommended for ages 5–10, with parents lending a hand. The event also features indoor slides, bouncy castles, and lots of games, led by the castle’s own graphic artist, Zsolt Bankó.

Halloween Nights: October 28–30

The Festetics Palace (Festetics Kastély) is more than just history and chateaus. On October 28, 29, and 30, brace yourself as the castle turns dark and mysterious after sunset. Unexplained noises echo, fleeting shadows haunt the centuries-old corridors, and forgotten secrets come to life. Only for brave souls aged 14 and up, group tours set out at 6 PM and 7:30 PM, limited to 25 people per group. Tickets sell fast—available at the palace and online.

Nature Tracking and Model Railways

October 30 is dedicated to tracking animal signs at the Hunting Exhibition—learn to spot the footprints and clues wild creatures leave behind in meadows, forests, and reed beds.

Get detective-like again on November 15 and December 20: the Model Train Exhibition and Playhouse host “Detect, Play, Ride!” Here, families hunt for hidden scenes using sharp eyes and smartphones, earning little prizes for each successful “agent.” Once the mystery is solved, hop on the kiddie train and finish the adventure with crafts and board games.

Halasi Lace Exhibition: November 30 – December 31

Feast your eyes on the intricate Halas lacework (Halasi csipke) at the Festetics Palace’s northern wing—a thing of beauty running through December.

Santa’s Magical Day: December 6

The Man with the Big Beard arrives! Kids can make reindeer snacks and butter cookies for Santa, write and send wish lists, take a magical train ride (ticket included), and gather at 4 PM for singalongs to help Santa find everyone. It’s a full day of sparkle, crafts, and sweet family fun.

Castle Crime: Interactive Whodunit – December 27 & 28

Who will be Hungary’s next star detective? On December 27 and 28, up to 50 would-be sleuths (ages 14 and up) are challenged to solve a shocking murder in the castle’s opulent halls. Collect clues, analyze evidence, and figure out fiendish twists. The $52 entry fee includes a welcome drink, sweet and savory treats, and a chance at the grand prize for the winning team. Sign up solo or with friends—places are strictly limited!

With so much happening, there’s only one problem: you won’t want fall and winter to end.
