Build a Puppet Village at the Library

January kicks off with Bábos Mesefalva, a hands-on storytelling workshop for kindergarteners and primary school kids. Head to the BRTK Library children’s section (8600 Siófok, Fő tér 2) on Wednesday, January 28 and Thursday, January 29, 9:00–15:00 both days. Sessions run 1.5–2 hours and blend crafts and simple tech as groups co-create the tale while building an entire village for their favorite characters. It’s collaborative, tactile, and fully driven by the kids’ imagination.

Carnival Week: Music, Costumes, and Treats

Friday, January 30 brings two free highlights at the BRTK Library’s children’s section. Géza Áprily’s interactive, musical carnival show Itt a farsang, áll a bál hits the stage at 10:30 and 16:30 with singalong energy and audience play. In between, from 15:00–17:00, the library hosts Farsangi Buli 2026, a come-as-you-are party where costumes are very much the point. Arrive in costume to snag a small library surprise. No tickets needed—just bring your best mask and carnival spirit.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly lineup year-round—puppets, musicals, ice rink, craft workshops—easy picks for toddlers to pre-teens
+
Many events are free or low-cost (library carnival, workshops), so it’s budget-friendly for U.S. families
+
Lake Balaton/Siófok is Hungary’s classic beach resort, with plenty of kid amenities, cafés, and open spaces around venues
+
Winter ice rink at Big Beach adds rides and activities beyond skating, great backup if weather’s chilly
+
Icons like Cinderella and universal themes make shows easy to follow even if you miss some words
+
Locations are centralized (BRTK Library on Fő tér, Imre Kálmán Cultural Center), so you can plan a simple day around town
+
Siófok is reachable from Budapest by frequent trains/buses and straightforward driving on M7, with walkable distances in town - Most performances and workshops are in Hungarian, so non-speakers may miss jokes, instructions, or interactive bits
Cons
Siófok is well-known to Hungarians and regional travelers but less famous to U.S. tourists, so there’s less English-language info and signage
Public transport is easy to Siófok, but winter schedules can be thinner; parking near central venues may be tight during big events
Compared to kids’ museums or theme parks in the U.S./Western Europe, production scale is smaller and more local, which may feel less “wow” to some kids
