Nestled in beautiful surroundings, Festetics Palace (Festetics-kastély) in Keszthely is rolling out an irresistible lineup of programs this fall and winter. From interactive mysteries and Halloween chills to creative workshops for families and dreamy theater, there’s something special for everyone—adults and kids alike. Whether you’re seeking aristocratic elegance, ghostly excitement, a dash of creativity, or a railway-filled adventure, these events are set to bring sparkle—and a little shiver—to your autumn and winter breaks.
Autumn Break: Unforgettable Days at the Palace
From October 24 to November 2, Festetics Palace (Festetics-kastĂ©ly) throws open the doors to its magnificent northern wing every day (except November 1) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wander through glittering ballrooms, suites, and the Venetian Mirror Hall, exploring behind-the-scenes stories of Hungarian nobility. Each day, themed guided tours will bring palace history to life: at 11 a.m., discover aristocratic transportation from carriages to vintage automobiles; at 1 p.m., learn how hunting became pivotal for wildlife conservation; and at 2:30 p.m., dive into the magical “Night Lights” at the Historical Model Railway Exhibition.
Sleep Theater: Bedtime Magic Like You’ve Never Seen
October 25 promises an extraordinary experience with “AlvĂłszĂnház” (“Sleep Theater”) starring AngĂ©la Eke. Instead of regular seating, guests snuggle up in a luxurious bed installation, wrapped in soft blankets designed by Anna AmĂ©lie. AngĂ©la Eke herself tucks in the audience before telling a mesmerizing story—an event merging the coziness of bedtime with the magic of live performance. Two sessions run (4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.), and tickets are available both onsite and online.
Hands-on Creativity: Family Fun in the Playhouse
On October 25, families are invited for a unique creative afternoon at the Historical Playhouse on Vienna Gate Street (Bécsi kapu utca). Kids and parents work side-by-side, designing their own patterns to print on T-shirts brought from home. Whether drawing inspiration from templates or inventing their own designs, everyone goes home with a custom shirt. Aimed at ages 5-10 (with help from parents), the event is filled with slides, bouncy castles, and a ton of games—led by Zsolt Bankó, artist and museum educator.
Spooky Halloween Nights: The Palace After Dark
Ready to see the darker side of the palace? On October 28, 29, and 30, as twilight falls, brave visitors 14 and older can join Halloween Nights. Groups of up to 25 venture through shadowy corridors at 6 p.m. or 7:30 p.m., shrouded in mysterious sounds, fleeting shadows, and the thrilling secrets of the past. Groups fill up fast, so book your ticket if you dare.
Model Railways, Dioramas, and Tracking Adventure
On October 26, model railway fans can learn the craft firsthand, building their own tiny diorama under expert guidance right in the exhibition area. For young sleuths and nature lovers, October 30 is all about “Tracking in Nature” at the Hunting Exhibition—guests investigate animal footprints and traces in the field and forest.
Non-Stop Themed Days for Kids
Every day from October 23 to November 2, the Historical Playhouse offers a new flavor of fun: from vintage slide film screenings on Mondays and family board game tournaments on Tuesdays, to animal quizzes, scavenger hunts, UNO parties, and eco-friendly art on Sundays. Leave the screens behind—here, kids find real friends and laughter, not just pixels.
Train, Play, and Investigate!
Mark November 15 and December 20 for “Nyomozz, játssz, vonatozz!” (“Investigate, Play, Railway!”). Budding detectives comb the model railway layout using their phones to spot every hidden clue; successful sleuths earn a fun prize. Afterwards, hop on the miniature train and head to the Playhouse for crafts and board games galore.
A Lacework of Art and Christmas Wonders
From November 30 to December 31, the renowned Halas Lace (Halasi csipke) Exhibition brightens the palace’s northern wing, showcasing intricate needlework treasures.
On December 6, children (and kids at heart) celebrate St. Nicholas at the Playhouse. Activities abound: making treats for Santa’s reindeer, baking butter cookies for the old man himself, writing wish lists to stuff in the Santa mailbox, and singing together at 4 p.m. to welcome Santa’s arrival.
Palace Crime Nights: Who’s the Best Private Detective?
Up for a challenge? On December 27 and 28, the palace transforms into the scene of a mysterious murder for its “Palace Crime” (“KastĂ©ly-krimi”) interactive investigation. Limited to Hungary’s top 50 amateur detectives ages 14 and up, participants race against each other to crack the case using their wits and a trail of evidence. Your $52 entry covers savory and sweet treats, a welcome drink, and maybe—just maybe—a big surprise if your team triumphs.
Whether you’re dreaming, playing, crafting, solving mysteries, or shaking in your boots, Festetics Palace is the place to be this season. Let the adventures begin!
