On August 23, 2025, the bank of the Danube (Duna) in Vác will transform into a bubbling, aromatic battleground for Hungary’s 49th National Fish Cooking Competition. Hosted by MA-HAL, the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Organization, this annual event draws fish lovers, amateur foodie warriors, and local families for a day of tradition, flavor, and friendly rivalry.

This riverside cook-off isn’t just about bragging rights or who can stir the meanest fisherman’s soup (halászlé). Its main mission is to get people excited about eating fish, spotlight regional specialties, and let visitors sample the best of Hungary’s fish cuisine. And because the Ministry of Agriculture (Agrarian Ministry) and the National Federation of Hungarian Anglers (MOHOSZ) are backing the event, admission is completely free. For those bringing little ones or not too keen on eating their weight in fish, there will be cultural performances and kid-friendly activities to keep the whole family entertained.

When and Where to Get Your Fish On

Festivities kick off at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 23, 2025. The location: right next to the Attila statue on the riverside promenade in Vác. Expect the air to be filled with the clatter of giant cauldrons, clouds of paprika, and the excited chatter of chefs and foodies, all clutching their tasting spoons.

Contestants can throw their ladles into one or two of the three main categories: Danube-style fisherman’s soup (halászlé), Tisza–Körös-style fisherman’s soup (halászlé), and “other fish dishes,” where anything goes as long as it’s fish-based. There are even special awards up for grabs: audience favorite, best African catfish dish, and a child-friendly fish meal that’s boneless, local, safe, and easy for kids to eat.

Teams have until August 15 to sign up. Entry for one dish costs 12,000 HUF (about $33), while two entries cost 17,000 HUF (roughly $47). Only the first 50 teams to register can compete (first come, first served), so spots fill up quickly!

How to Join—and What You Get

The competition is open to anyone who agrees to the rules: only food cooked on-site counts, and each team can enter a maximum of two dishes. Teams are encouraged to wear matching shirts or aprons—and to pick a team name as memorable as their soup.

Entry fees don’t just secure a shot at glory: teams receive a cooking space under a party tent, an outdoor bench-and-table set, and, for fish supplies, 13 pounds (6 kg) of either African catfish or carp per dish (unless you choose to bring your own). Drinking water and trash bags are included. Contestants must bring their own cauldrons, utensils, extra fish if desired, and gas burners (no open wood fires allowed).

Visitors eager for a taste won’t be left out: for just 1,000 HUF (around $2.75), anyone can buy a tasting ticket and sample dishes from the competitors. Each team must serve at least 20 portions of each entry, and tasting bowls are provided by MA-HAL.

Tough Crowd: Judging and Prizes

Judging takes place between noon and 1:30 PM, with a panel of four in each category. Dishes are rated on appearance, color, aroma, flavor, and consistency, using a 100-point system. The top three in each main category receive valuable non-cash prizes. Every participating team walks away with a commemorative certificate and a bottle of wine customized for the event. The best-named, best-dressed, and best-fed will find plenty to celebrate.

Everything Else to Do: Food, Fun, and Exploring Vác

Beyond the contest, Vác offers a full-blown foodie field trip. Nestled between Verőce and Vác, right on the Danube (Duna), the Camelot Club Hotel boasts spacious, air-conditioned rooms decorated with rustic carved wood, plus an eclectic food and drink menu. The riverside is also a hotspot for sports fans: the Code27 Jet-ski Center welcomes newcomers eager to experience the thrill of jet-skiing, with sandy beaches for sunbathing and a buzzing beach bar.

Dining out? The Riverside Fisherman’s Garden Restaurant (Duna-parti Halászkert Étterem) offers not only fish but also specialties ranging from duck and pork to beef, paired with wines from Hungary’s top regions. If jazz and cocktails are more your scene, JazzMine—Vác’s first jazz club—promises live music, dancing, and drinks to keep spirits high. And for vegans or picky eaters, spots like Pampalini serve up culinary experiences with premium ingredients to satisfy all appetites.

For a dose of culture, the Visitor Center welcomes tourists, cyclists, and families alike, inviting everyone to experience the spirit and history of the Catholic Church in Vác. For the ultimate escape, Kertünk greets solo wanderers, families, and dogs to relax under plum trees with scenic views of the Danube Bend, good music, creative workshops, and fresh air.

Mark your calendars: on August 23, Vác transforms into Hungary’s biggest fish celebration. Whether you’re competing, sampling, grooving to jazz, or just picnicking by the water, it’s the perfect place to get a taste of Hungarian tradition—bowl by steaming bowl. Just remember: the organizers reserve the right to adjust the schedule or add extra surprises. Bring your appetite, your curiosity, and maybe some elastic-waist pants.
