Budapest’s Museum of the National Assembly (Országgyűlési Múzeum) is rolling out free guided tours every Saturday of “A Thousand Years of Hungarian Legislation” (A magyar törvényhozás ezer éve), the museum’s continuously refreshed exhibition. The 45-minute tours start at 10:00 a.m. from the Parliament Visitor Centre at 1–3 Kossuth Lajos Square (Kossuth Lajos tér), in the 5th District (Belváros–Lipótváros). Registration is required, and each tour is capped at 30 people; admission is granted by showing the confirmation email. Sign up by 10:00 a.m. the day before via the provided email address.
What the exhibition covers
Set across eight chronological chapters, the exhibition traces the roots, formation, and evolution of Hungarian parliamentarism from the Middle Ages to the democratic transition. The opening section follows the path from the earliest assemblies to the era of estate-based diets. The second section spans up to 1918, charting the birth of the modern parliament—from reform-era diets and the creation of popular representation to the consolidation of a system built on new principles. The third section summarizes the turbulent period between 1918 and 1990, marked by searches for direction and repeated restarts. Visitors can explore highlights like the Golden Bull (Aranybulla) and the April Laws through interactive displays and delve deeper into the political shifts of the twentieth century.
