Budapest’s Museum of the National Assembly (Országgyűlési Múzeum) is launching free guided tours every Saturday for the exhibition “A Thousand Years of Hungarian Legislation” (A magyar törvényhozás ezer éve). The 45-minute tours start from the Parliament Visitor Centre at 10:00 a.m., and the display is continuously refreshed with new material.
What the exhibition covers
Presented in eight chronological chapters, the exhibition traces the roots, rise, and evolution of Hungarian parliamentarism from the Middle Ages to the regime change. The first section follows the story from the earliest assemblies to the era of estate-based Diets. The second section spans up to 1918, charting the birth of the modern parliament from the Reform Diets through the creation of a representative assembly to the consolidation of a system built on new principles. The third section summarizes the twists of parliamentary life between 1918 and 1990, from experiments to restarts.
