Sopron’s cobblestoned heart is rolling out a full year of guaranteed guided city walks, inviting locals and visitors to dig into the “Loyal City’s” secrets. Starting January 31, 2026, the program is anchored at 2 Szent György Street (Szent György u. 2.) and runs every Saturday through December. Expect story-filled gateways, atmospheric lanes, and a laid-back, family-friendly pace that turns a stroll into a bit of time travel. It’s sightseeing, a day trip, and a casual cultural hit rolled into one.
Phone booking is encouraged, and practical add-ons like accommodation and food-and-drink tips are available through the organizers’ contact points.
Theme of the Year: On the Shoulders of Giants
The headline series “Óriások vállán – híres soproni családok nyomában” (On the Shoulders of Giants – In the Footsteps of Famous Sopron Families) is free and repeats weekly, shining a spotlight on the city’s influential lineages and the urban fabric they shaped. The walks run across the historic quarters, bridging palaces and guild houses, old ramparts and modern corners, while guides unwind stories spanning centuries of Sopron’s trade, culture, and borderland swagger.
Dates are set for every Saturday from 2026.01.31 through 2026.12.19, covering 44 sessions in total. The schedule is simple: if it’s Saturday, there’s a free Giants walk in Sopron.

Where to Stay: Close, Quiet, and Green
Sopron keeps it easy for weekend plans with a cluster of guesthouses and pensions near the old town and the leafy Lövérek (Lővérek) district. Several options are a short walk from the historic center—10 to 20 minutes on foot—yet still nestle in calm, green surroundings near the pool complex and hiking trails.
Adorján Guesthouse (Adorján Vendégház) spans two floors with seven rooms (singles, doubles, triples), offering space for up to 32 guests. It’s a family operation with a friendly vibe and a practical location: the downtown sights are about a 10-minute walk away.
Alpokalja Guesthouse (Alpokalja Vendégház) sits in a quiet pocket of Sopron, roughly a 20-minute stroll from the historic core. It works well for travelers who want the city at arm’s length but also crave a peaceful base to recharge between walks and wine bars.
Anita Apartment Sopron (Anita Apartman Sopron) spreads out near Hungary’s western border at the foot of the Alps, about 37 miles from Vienna. Choose from multiple apartments for a flexible stay—good for families or small groups who prefer their own kitchen and extra space without straying from the city vibe.
Lövérek (Lővérek): Forest Air, Trailheads, and Easy Access
Several pensions line the Lövérek hillside, roughly 15 minutes on foot from the city center. It’s a sweet spot for hikers: the recreational quarter is close, with marked routes branching into the surrounding hills. If winter calls, Lower Austrian ski resorts lie about 37 miles from Sopron, offering reliable slopes and plenty of services during ski season.
Pensions in this area emphasize quiet buildings, independent setups, and rest-first design—ideal if you’re planning to do the Giants walk in the morning and a forest loop in the afternoon.
Old Town Charm: Stay by the Walls
Atrium (Átrium) welcomes guests just a few minutes’ walk from the historic center, putting you within easy reach of squares, cafés, and the starting point at 2 Szent György Street (Szent György u. 2.). It’s tailored for travelers who want to lean into the city’s Baroque flair without juggling transit.
Bastion Pension (Bástya Panzió) leans into history: the hotel hugs Sopron’s 700-plus-year-old outer city wall beside a small bastion, right in the heart of town. The two-story property sits by the Vienna Gate (Bécsi kapu) approach, at the corner of Vienna Street (Bécsi utca) and Stream Street (Patak utca) on the slope of Coronation Hill (Koronázó domb). If you like your city breaks with a dose of medieval stonework and a short walk to everything, this is the mood.
Downtown Apartments: Steps from the Old Town
If you want central but quiet, several apartment houses sit just 150 meters from the old town, with easy car access. These are practical for couples or families who want self-catering, extra room, and a home base that’s a flipbook of Sopron life: morning coffee in a courtyard, the noon bell over tiled rooftops, and an evening route through storybook gates.
Call to reserve a spot, lace up for Saturdays, and let Sopron’s giants lead the way.
