Hidden right next to the Ópusztaszer National Historical Memorial Park (Ópusztaszeri Nemzeti Történeti Emlékpark), just a short drive from civilization, lies the world’s third-largest maze—a sprawling 2.2-mile (3.5 km) labyrinth crafted from 35,000 privet shrubs. Designed in the shape of the legendary Wonder Deer (Csodaszarvas) from Hungarian mythology, this hedge maze isn’t just large enough to spot from satellites—it’s packed with quirky games, challenges, and special events. Whether you’re arriving with restless kids, adventurous friends, or simply want to outsmart strangers in a leafy puzzle, this is one autumn adventure you’ll actually remember.
Explore the Maze (And Much More)
From October 21 to 26, families and thrill-seekers can explore the maze as part of the park’s autumn program. As you wind through the towering greenery, themed quiz trails guide you in the right direction—if you can solve the riddles, you’ll eventually find your way out. Don’t worry if mazes aren’t your strength: there’s also a sneaky transparent labyrinth made from wire fencing, designed to test your patience and sense of direction.
If you crave a bird’s-eye view, climb the three-story lookout tower constructed of soft netting, gaze over the living labyrinth below, and then zoom back down—climbing is just as much fun as solving. The park’s playground celebrates earth, water, and air, giving each element its own adventurous twist. For competitive types, the 22,000-square-foot (2,000 m²) battle arena is perfect for “number wars”—a game like extreme hide-and-seek with friends, using the bushes for cover.
Younger children can dig into the custom-built sand factory or try their hand at classic Hungarian skill games like finger labyrinths, turul, or kugli. For a break from all the activity, stop by the traditional thatched-roof yurt, modeled after the iconic Bugac dry mill.
Pumpkin Carving and Nighttime Thrills
October wouldn’t be complete without pumpkins and ghosts. On October 25, families are invited to join a pumpkin carving extravaganza—create quirky pumpkin families and glowing lanterns, then parade your masterpiece home as a Halloween souvenir.
If you prefer a dose of horror, October 31 brings Halloween chills to the park. Craft your scariest jack-o’-lantern, then dare to enter the labyrinth after dark, winding through shadowy passages if you’re feeling bold. Navigating a maze by moonlight gives new meaning to “lost and afraid.”
Celebrity Hide-and-Seek
On October 23, the park hosts a special game of hide-and-seek with a twist: Zoltán Széplaki, the charismatic firefighter known from Hungary’s “Married at First Sight” show, will be the one hiding out in the vast maze. If you’ve ever wanted to hunt for celebrities in a hedge, now’s your chance.
Comfy Stays and Hearty Meals
Multi-day explorers can settle in at the local Forest Guesthouses, offering a range of rooms and apartments right at the edge of the woods. Year-round, Ópusztaszer (Ópusztaszer) welcomes guests seeking restful nights, with peaceful surroundings and free onsite parking.
For true Hungarian flavors, the local tavern serves everything from homestyle soups and kettle stews to fish dishes, beef, Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pork feasts, and baked specialties. There are plenty of vegetarian options too. With carved wooden furniture and a cozy terrace, it’s perfect for families. Nearby, Szeri Inn (Szeri Csárda), a historic inn decorated with genuine bandit memorabilia, offers classic national cuisine—advance booking required!
