The bustling tradition of market fairs thrives in Nagykőrös (Nagykőrös), where crowds of 8,000-10,000 people gather throughout the year—but when St. Michael’s Day (Szent Mihály nap) arrives, expect over 20,000 visitors. Shoppers stroll through colorful stalls packed with clothes, gifts, plants, and animals—both livestock and pets—soaking up the festival atmosphere.

The Main Event

Mark your calendar: the St. Michael’s Day Fair (Szent Mihály-napi Vásár) unfolds on September 28, 2025, at 1 Alsójárás Lane (Alsójárás dűlő 1). This fair draws on royal privileges dating back to 1759, when Maria Theresa granted the loyal city of Nagykőrös its first market rights. The tradition remains vibrant, as herders bring in every kind of hoofed animal imaginable, mingling with today’s craftsmen, merchants, food vendors, minstrels, comedians, fire-eaters, puppeteers, folk dancers, and lively barkers. Only those who prove their skills with a valid seal and pay the fair fee can join the festivities.

A Day at the Fair

Nagykőrös hosts 10 national animal and goods fairs each year, but none like this one. Around 400 licensed vendors fuel an astonishing mix of wares: beyond fairground goods, dedicated animal markets feature horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry, and small pets.

Market gates swing open early: goods at 4:30 a.m., the pig gate at 5 a.m., cattle at 5:30 a.m., and the horse market at 6 a.m. The fun lasts until about 1 or 2 p.m.—weather permitting. If you’re looking for tradition, livestock, music, and a bustling crowd, this is the day to visit Nagykőrös.

Organizers reserve the right to change the schedule or program.
